A 32-year-old man, known only as “S,” has broken his silence after escaping a life of alleged captivity and abuse at the hands of his stepmother, Kimberly Sullivan. For two decades, he was reportedly confined in their home in Waterbury, Connecticut. His first public statement since fleeing the nightmarish conditions came through his representative and spokesperson, David Guarino of Survivors Say.
In the statement, “S” expressed his gratitude for the support he has received since his harrowing escape. He stated, “I am much better and stronger than I was the day the first responders carried me out of my home. I am beyond grateful for the care I have received since then.” This poignant acknowledgment rings true as he navigates the aftermath of such traumatic experiences.
“S” particularly thanked healthcare professionals who have played a vital role in his recovery. He remarked, “To all the health care professionals who have helped and nurtured me, thank you. In addition to all of your care, I appreciated the chance to have my first ever birthday party to celebrate turning 32.” This birthday celebration stands in stark contrast to the years of torment he faced.
Furthermore, he extended gratitude to law enforcement, first responders, and others who have aided his quest for justice. He emphasized the need for accountability, stating, “I also want to thank the first responders, the law enforcement investigators, and everyone who is working to hold those responsible for my abuse accountable.” These words reflect a newfound hope as he seeks to rebuild his life.
In his statement, “S” expressed appreciation for Safe Haven Waterbury, an organization providing recovery support, and highlighted the assistance he has received through a community fundraising campaign. He noted, “Thank you to everyone at Safe Haven Waterbury and everyone who has given to the GoFundMe page that will help cover some of the overwhelming expenses I will face in the weeks, months, and years to come.” This acknowledgment reveals his understanding of the significant challenges ahead.
With the legal process underway, he also showed immense appreciation for his legal team and conservator. He noted, “I am grateful to the conservator and my attorney, who will help guide me through the legal process ahead. They have been invaluable to me, and I am grateful for their tireless support.” Their dedication offers him hope for a fair resolution.
In his statement, “S” hinted at the complexity surrounding his situation, saying, “Much has already been said that tells part of the story of the abuse I endured. Someday, perhaps my whole story will be told.” This comment signifies his desire to share the full extent of his experiences, which remain shrouded in trauma.
He urged all parties involved in his case, including the media, to respect the ongoing investigations and his privacy. “I ask everyone involved in my story to fully cooperate with the authorities who are helping me seek justice for these crimes. I also ask the public and the media to respect those investigations and my privacy as this process plays out. This isn’t just a story. It’s my life,” he asserted, emphasizing his humanity amidst the legal proceedings.
As he continues to heal, “S” invites the public to support him during this challenging time. He stated, “Thank you all for your thoughts and messages, your support and your continued prayers as I recover.” Such encouragement from the community can be instrumental in his path to recovery.
On February 27, “S” reportedly set fire to the home he shared with Sullivan, expressing to first responders that he was desperate for freedom. This dramatic escape opened the door to an investigation that would reveal shocking details about his alleged mistreatment.
Following this incident, Sullivan was arrested on March 12 and faces serious charges. According to the arrest warrant, she has been charged with first-degree assault, second-degree kidnapping, first-degree unlawful restraint, cruelty to persons, and first-degree reckless endangerment.
Testimonies from “S” paint a grim picture of his life in captivity. He described being confined in a windowless storage closet that measured only 8 feet by 9 feet. For two decades, he endured these conditions, reportedly spending 22 to 24 hours each day locked inside.
During those years, he was allowed merely two sandwiches and two small bottles of water each day. One of those water bottles would serve the dual purpose of providing hydration and cleanliness. Tragically, he relied on bottles and newspaper for sanitary needs. When first responders discovered him, he weighed less than 70 pounds, a stark indicator of the severity of his situation.
In an interview, Sullivan’s attorney Ioannis Kaloidis rejected the allegations of abuse. He claimed, “I can tell you that the allegations were that this individual claims to have been imprisoned in that home up until the day of the fire. And my client adamantly denies that there was any imprisonment.” Kaloidis expressed anticipation for further revelations to emerge during the trial, underscoring the significance of a fair legal process.
Fox News Digital has reached out for additional information from Sullivan’s legal team, but no further comments have been made as the case continues to unfold.
The story of “S” serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. Overcoming decades of abuse and confinement, he now embarks on a new journey towards healing and recovery. His experience highlights the importance of community support, legal advocacy, and mental health resources in assisting survivors of trauma. As the legal proceedings continue, the public remains hopeful for justice and understanding, not only for “S” but for all survivors of abuse.
