Survivor of Tragic Family Murder Reflects on Years of Loss Following Execution of Family’s Killer

A tragic chapter in Florida’s criminal history reached a resolution last week with the execution of James D. Ford, who was convicted of murdering a newlywed couple almost three decades ago. The execution, carried out via lethal injection at Florida State Prison, marked the state’s first of the year. It also resurrected painful memories for the couple’s surviving daughter, Maranda Malnory, who has bravely spoken about her experience in the aftermath of the chilling crime.

On February 13, Ford, 64, faced justice for the murders of Greg Malnory, 25, and his wife Kimberly, 26. Their deaths occurred in front of their 22-month-old daughter, who witnessed the horrific events unfold but managed to survive.

Maranda, now 29, shared her feelings in an interview with Fox News Digital, expressing a profound sense of loss. “I feel like I missed out on a lot of love… that love from my mom and dad,” she said. While the execution of her parents’ killer does not equate to closure, she expressed a sense of peace knowing that Ford would never be able to harm her again.

A Day of Horror in 1997

The tragic events began on a Sunday morning in April 1997. Greg and Kimberly Malnory headed out for a fishing trip at South Florida Sod Farm, where Greg worked. Their lives were brutally cut short, leaving Maranda to confront a reality no child should have to bear.

The following day, authorities discovered their bodies near their pickup truck, both victims of a gruesome crime. Maranda was found securely strapped in her car seat, having survived the attack that claimed her parents’ lives.

Divine Intervention and Memories of Survival

“Poor Maranda, just left there to die. It was actually divine intervention that she survived,” shared Connie Ankney, Greg’s mother. “The angels must have been with her.” Maranda, however, has no recollection of the attack itself. Instead, her memories are clouded with the aftermath of learning about the tragic event.

Growing up with her grandparents, Maranda was initially shielded from the horrifying details of her parents’ deaths. It wasn’t until she turned 13 that she took matters into her own hands. “I was on my computer… and I Googled it. I Googled every detail I could find,” she recalled. Her search revealed the brutal nature of the crimes that had been perpetrated against her parents.

Heart-Wrenching Discoveries

Researching the case shattered Maranda’s understanding of her past. She learned that her father had been shot in the head and bludgeoned, while her mother had suffered a horrific attack involving sexual assault, beating, and gunfire, according to court records.

Maranda spent over 18 hours in the truck with her parents’ blood surrounding her. “I didn’t realize the extent of it until I read it,” she said, emotionally reflecting on her parents’ struggles and the fight they put up to protect her during the horrifying incident.

The Fight for Survival

Greg Malnory had been attacked while trying to save his daughter from the hands of her mother’s attacker. Investigators found defensive wounds on Kimberly’s arms, evidence of her desperate fight for her family’s survival. “I honestly think had she been able to find my dad’s truck keys, she would have gone to get help,” Maranda stated. “That’s why I was in my car seat… she was going to get help having seen what happened to my dad.”

During the investigation, law enforcement identified Ford, who had worked with Greg, as the primary suspect. He was caught in a perplexing state hours later, covered in blood and with injuries that raised alarms. The brutal details surrounding the case connected Ford’s DNA with both Kimberly and Greg, cementing his involvement in their deaths.

Living with the Legacy of Loss

Maranda faced a painful journey to understanding her past. As she became an adult, asking about the events of that dreadful day became somewhat easier for her. Appreciating the support of her close-knit community, she acknowledged the critical role it played in locating her and her parents soon after the crime. “That in itself, if you ask me, is… I don’t want to call it a miracle, but it is,” Maranda said, reflecting on the local effort to help find her.

With time, Maranda connected with the employee from South Florida Sod Farm who discovered her and her parents. Her gratitude overflowed as she personally thanked him for finding her and her parents, recognizing his presence at a time of great despair.

A Legacy of Love

The couple, who had married just six months prior to their deaths, left an indelible mark on Maranda’s life. “I think about them every day. I have their names tattooed on my wrist,” Maranda said. “They’re my heroes… I honestly think that I wouldn’t be here had it not been for them.” She nurtures a picture of her parents holding her as a baby, taken shortly before their brutal murder, a tender reminder of the love she lost.

Maranda’s journey reflects not just a survivor’s tale but also a testament to resilience. Working in special education, she is committed to giving back to her community, embodying the support and love she received during her own challenges. “I can do my part because of things that were done for me,” she expressed, highlighting the enduring bond of community support even after the execution of her parents’ killer.

A Journey Forward

Maranda continues to navigate the complexities of her emotions surrounding her parents’ murder and its aftermath. The execution of Ford may have provided a measure of justice, but for Maranda, the ache of loss endures. “It impacts me in some big ways and some little ways,” she reflected. “I’m terrified of the dark and loud noises… but I also think it makes me fight a little harder… I fight every day to show him that he doesn’t get to win.”

As the years continue to unfold, Maranda treasures the memories of her parents and seeks to honor their legacy through her life and work. Her journey is a poignant reminder of the enduring impact of violence and the power of resilience against unimaginable odds.
