A year ago, an assassination attempt on then-presidential candidate Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania forever changed the lives of many. Two men sustained severe injuries, while a third individual tragically lost his life.

James Copenhaver, David Dutch, and the family of the late Corey Comperatore grapple with lingering questions regarding the events of July 13, 2024—a day they will never forget.

Dawn Comperatore Schafer, Corey Comperatore’s sister, expressed her anger at the assassin Thomas Crooks, stating, “You missed Trump, but you got my big brother. My brother was assassinated that day. Not Donald Trump, but Corey Comperatore was assassinated that day. You did not miss.”

At the age of 50, Comperatore was a respected fire chief for the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company and a dedicated husband and father.

Remembering Corey: A Family’s Loss

Kelly Comperatore Meeder, another sister, remembered Corey fondly, saying, “He was so perfect that we called him Golden Boy.” This sentiment echoed throughout family gatherings filled with love and sorrow.

Corey was passionate about fishing, often taking quiet mornings alone or with his wife. His family described these moments as his time with God, emphasizing his devotion to prayer. Known as the “ultimate girl dad,” Corey participated in every activity for his daughters, proudly dressing them and celebrating their achievements.

Unanswered Questions Persist

Following the tragedy, the Comperatore family faced a series of unresolved questions. Why did inadequate security allow such an attack to occur? Comperatore Schafer articulated her concerns, stating, “I know about negligence. There were so many morale hazards and moral hazards. I was looking at it and thinking to myself, ‘my God.’”

David Dutch, a 58-year-old Marine Corps veteran, and James Copenhaver, a 75-year-old U.S. National Guard veteran, echoed similar concerns about security lapses on that fateful day.

“When they were saying that there’s someone on the roof and he has a gun … why did they march President Trump out on that X?” Comperatore Meeder questioned, pointing out the inadequacies in the security measures surrounding the rally.

Life-Altering Injuries and Ongoing Recovery

Both Dutch and Copenhaver sustained life-altering injuries during the attack. Dutch suffered from gunshot wounds to his abdomen while fragments hit his liver, which still affects him today. Copenhaver endured two gunshot wounds, one to his arm and another to his colon. They continue to seek medical treatment for both physical and psychological trauma.

Reflecting on his experience, Dutch recounted the chaos of the shooting. “When I felt my ribs all broke up, all I tried to do was get out of the line of fire because there was a lot of shrapnel just flying all over the bleachers,” he said. Copenhaver managed to capture footage of the shooter on the roof of a nearby building, revealing the vulnerabilities present at the rally.

The Insufficient Security Measures

The Independent Review Panel published a report revealing critical flaws in the U.S. Secret Service’s preparedness leading up to the assassination attempt. The findings indicated that security personnel were not properly assigned to key areas, leaving the shooter with an unobstructed view of Trump’s rally.

This report highlighted the ambiguous nature of security command, stating that local agencies were left without clear direction from the Secret Service. Both survivors felt the repercussions of these failures acutely as they face long road to recovery.

Moving Forward: A Journey of Resilience

Despite the trauma they experienced, Dutch and Copenhaver refuse to dwell on the past. Instead, they focus on personal recovery and cherishing time with family. Dutch hopes to be healthy enough to engage in activities with his grandchildren, while Copenhaver longs to ride his motorcycle again, a passion he has not pursued since the shooting.

Copenhaver emphasized the importance of living life fully. “I try to remind everybody, you never know when your time’s gonna come, so don’t dwell in the past,” he expressed. “Go out there and live life. You never know when it’s gonna end.”
