Cody Balmer, a 38-year-old man from Harrisburg, has been charged with setting fire to the mansion of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. The alleged arsonist turned himself in, as detailed in the criminal complaint obtained by Fox News.
Balmer’s identification came after he confessed to an ex-lover, suggesting she contact the authorities to report him. Shortly thereafter, Balmer voluntarily presented himself outside the Pennsylvania State Police headquarters.
During police interviews, Balmer admitted to harboring intense hatred towards Governor Shapiro. According to investigators, he revealed that he removed gasoline from a lawn mower and used it to fill Heineken bottles he had at home.
He explained that he walked for an hour to reach the governor’s residence with the intention of throwing his homemade Molotov cocktails inside.
As per police reports, Balmer confessed to climbing over a perimeter fence, smashing two windows with a hammer, and throwing Molotov cocktails into the mansion. He acknowledged being aware that Shapiro and possibly others were inside, understanding that his actions could result in serious injury.
Had he encountered the governor, Balmer claimed he would have attacked him with his hammer. Following his confession, he was transported to Dauphin County Prison for arraignment.
Security cameras recorded Balmer both outside and inside the governor’s mansion. He was described as wearing a black ‘Snap-On’ jacket, black boots, and carrying a bag. Police later recovered the jacket, bag, and a small sledgehammer from his residence.
The fire occurred around 2 a.m. on a Sunday morning. At that time, Governor Shapiro, who may be considering a run for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, and his family were observing the first night of the Jewish holiday Passover.
Governor Shapiro responded to the attack, stating that such violence has become alarmingly frequent in society. He expressed discontent with the current state of political hostility, declaring that the violence must end regardless of its source. He emphasized the need for improved conduct in political discourse.
This troubling incident raises concerns about safety and political rhetoric in the current climate, illustrating a growing trend of aggressive acts directed at public officials and their families.
Law enforcement officials continue to investigate Balmer’s motives and the circumstances surrounding this attack. As the investigation unfolds, the implications of this incident could resonate beyond Pennsylvania, raising broader questions about political violence and public safety.
