The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have officially placed undrafted defensive tackle Desmond Watson on the non-football injury list. This decision came due to ongoing concerns about his weight, which has hindered his progress since joining the team.
At 22 years old, Watson stands 6 feet 6 inches tall and originally weighed in at an impressive 464 pounds when the Buccaneers signed him after the 2025 NFL Draft. However, despite his efforts, he has only managed to reduce his weight to approximately 450 pounds, which is insufficient to participate in training camp activities.
Head coach Todd Bowles addressed the situation during a press conference, stating, “It’s just about trying to get him better, to be a healthier player and getting him on the field a little more.” Bowles expressed optimism about Watson’s dedication to improving his condition. He added, “That’s kind of where I’m at right now. He’s working at it, and we’re working with him. And that’s all you can ask right now.”
Despite his weight challenges, Watson possesses the talent to become an impactful run defender in the NFL. During his collegiate career with the Florida Gators, he recorded 63 tackles and 1.5 sacks over four seasons, showcasing his potential for greatness.
Coach Bowles further elaborated on the team’s approach to Watson’s training. He indicated that the coaching staff has specific goals for Watson and intends to monitor his progress closely. Bowles remarked, “We have some things we want to see him at, and we’ll continue to monitor that and get him to where we think he needs to be and go from there.” This proactive strategy highlights the coaching staff’s commitment to assisting Watson in reaching his potential.
Watson has openly discussed his struggle with weight gain, attributing it to unhealthy eating habits during his time at Florida. He candidly shared that stopping to purchase food while driving led to significant weight increase. “Stopping while driving,” Watson admitted when reflecting on bad habits he’s working to overcome. “My biggest thing is keep going, get to where I need to get. There are stores and a lot of temptations. That’s helped me immensely. Don’t go inside the gas station. Pay at the pump. Because inside it’s snacks and all types of things like that. Don’t pull over. If you’re on the highway, stay on the highway until you get where you’ve got to go.”
If Watson can successfully make the Buccaneers’ 53-man roster and participate in an NFL game, he would achieve a significant milestone as the heaviest player ever to compete in league history. This noteworthy accomplishment could reshape perceptions of player physique in football and provide inspiration for others facing similar challenges.
As the Buccaneers navigate this situation, it remains crucial for Watson to prioritize his health and fitness. The support from the coaching staff and team will play a vital role in his development as a player. With dedication and hard work, he has the potential to emerge as a formidable force on the field in the future.
This situation serves as a reminder of the complex relationship between athletic performance and health. While talent and skill are essential, maintaining physical fitness is equally important for success in the competitive landscape of professional football.
Watson’s journey reflects not only his personal battle but also the collective effort of the Buccaneers organization. The coaching staff, teammates, and training personnel all play a part in supporting Watson as he strives to achieve his goals. The team’s investment in his development underscores the importance of fostering a supportive environment for athletes facing challenges.
As he works through this period, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely. Watson’s determination to improve his condition could lead to inspiring changes both on and off the field. If he can achieve his weight loss goals and secure a spot on the roster, it would demonstrate the power of perseverance and the potential for success in the face of adversity.
