The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are reportedly preparing to waive defensive tackle Desmond Watson, who has gained notoriety as the heaviest player in the NFL. His time with the team has been plagued by weight-related issues, which has hindered his ability to participate in practices.
Multiple sources indicate that the Buccaneers will formalize this decision before the crucial roster cutdown deadline of 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
Watson previously played college football at the University of Florida. Following a lack of interest from NFL teams during the draft, he joined the Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent. At his pro day, he was officially listed at an alarming 464 pounds but had reportedly managed to shed 25 to 30 pounds prior to the draft.
Despite his weight loss efforts, Watson could not find sufficient practice time as he struggled to reach ideal conditioning. Consequently, he spent most of the training camp on the non-football injury list, raising concerns about his fitness level.
“He’s still working. Job’s not finished,” Watson’s agent, EJ Gonzalez, stated to the Associated Press, suggesting that the defensive tackle remains committed to improving his physicality.
The towering 6-foot-6 defensive tackle has not shied away from discussing his weight management challenges. Throughout the summer, he worked closely with a nutritionist to reshape his diet and lifestyle. However, the Buccaneers have not publicly defined what his target weight should be to facilitate his return to the field.
Watson openly addressed his dieting struggles, recalling his time at Florida. “Stopping while driving,
