EXCLUSIVE: Senator Ted Cruz has unveiled his personal goals for the New Year, setting the stage for a transformative 2026. In an exclusive interview, Cruz detailed three key resolutions that reflect both a commitment to personal health and spiritual growth.
In a conversation with Fox News Digital, the Republican senator from Texas emphasized his determination to adhere to these resolutions throughout the year ahead.
The first resolution resonates with many individuals at the start of a new year: a commitment to lose weight. Cruz stated, “I am aiming to drop 30 pounds this year.” Weighing in at 236 pounds on January 1, 2026, he expressed a clear target of reaching 206 pounds.
Cruz humorously recalled his college days, when he weighed just 135 pounds, jokingly remarking that some might say he is “twice the man I used to be.” His renewed commitment to health includes dietary changes and increased physical activity. He explained, “Dropping 30 pounds is something that would be good to do, so I’m going to work on diet and exercise.”
To kick off his health journey, Cruz is embracing a ketogenic diet, which emphasizes low carbohydrate intake. “I’m cutting out carbs and focusing on eating meat, cheese, and vegetables,” he detailed. He acknowledged that while adhering to a keto diet can be challenging, it often yields significant results.
Cruz’s second resolution is to participate in “dry January.” This decision means abstaining from alcoholic beverages for the entire month. He remarked, “I’ve long enjoyed red wine with dinner, but wine is filled with calories. If you’re trying to drop 30 pounds, pouring grape juice into your midsection is not conducive to that objective.”
In place of alcohol, Cruz has turned to alternatives like sparkling water with lime and vitamin-infused beverages. “You know, drinks that taste good and that I enjoy,” he said. His choice aligns with recent trends, as he noted the number of friends also engaging in dry January.
He recounted a social gathering where friends brought nonalcoholic beer, stating, “It was just a good chance hanging out with friends, and it turns out we all were doing the same thing.”
The final resolution focuses on Cruz’s commitment to spiritual growth by reading the Bible daily. “This is something I’ve done during different times of my life. With all the demands of work, family, and kids, it is easy to get pulled in different directions and lose that discipline,” Cruz explained.
He reminisced about family traditions, sharing that he and his wife, Heidi, participated in an “evening devotion” when their daughters were younger. As their girls matured, maintaining this practice became more challenging. He expressed a deep yearning to reflect on the scriptures, stating, “I want to read the word and reflect on it and have my spirit open to listen — listen to the Holy Spirit.”
Recently, after declaring his resolutions, his pastor proposed they spend a Sunday each month together engaged in prayer and Bible study.
Cruz recounted how his faith and commitment to Bible study have been integral to his life since childhood. He remarked, “There are different times in life where you have more or less discipline and consistency.” However, he added that he plans to return to prioritizing daily scripture reading.
Currently, just weeks into the new year, Cruz reflects positively on his progress. “It’s going well,” he commented appreciatively.
Regarding his diet, Cruz has stayed committed and is integrating more exercise into his routine. He shares, “I already play basketball twice a week, and I’m going to be working in daily pushups.”
Apart from personal goals, Cruz underscored the importance of family. He mentioned his daughters, aged 15 and 17, noting their approaching transitions toward independence as one is a high school senior and the other a freshman.
Cruz highlighted the rush of time as they evolve into adulthood, saying, “You reflect on the limited number of days they’re going to be home much longer.” He candidly expressed his love for his daughters, stating, “When they leave for school, I’ll go into their bedrooms and just cry. I love my girls.”
He conveyed his desire to dedicate quality time to his family. “The days that the girls are home and not out in the world are rapidly dwindling, and that makes you want to make sure you’re carving out time right now,” he said earnestly.
As for possible ambitions concerning a 2028 presidential run, Cruz made it clear that his focus currently lies in representing the 31 million Texans in his care. “It is an incredible privilege to serve them and represent the great state of Texas in the U.S. Senate,” he emphasized.
“That is my priority right now and my sole focus,” Cruz concluded.
