FIRST ON FOX: Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, has initiated a renewed effort to address illegal immigration by focusing on individuals who evade law enforcement. This initiative is named in honor of a Border Patrol agent who tragically lost his life while pursuing illegal aliens.
Cruz has reintroduced the Senate version of the Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act. This important legislation is named after Border Patrol Agent Raul Gonzalez, who died in a vehicle accident while on duty in Texas in 2022, engaged in a pursuit of illegal immigrants.
The proposed bill seeks to designate a failure to yield to a Border Patrol agent as a felony, punishable by a prison term of up to two years. Additionally, if a Border Patrol agent becomes injured during a vehicle chase involving illegal migrants, the offender could face a prison sentence ranging from a minimum of five years to a maximum of twenty years.
In more severe situations, where an agent loses their life during such pursuits, the bill stipulates a minimum sentence of ten years, potentially escalating to a life sentence. Each of these offenses could also incur monetary penalties, possibly reaching up to $250,000.
Moreover, the legislation mandates that the Department of Justice provide Congress with reports on the frequency of prosecutions against illegal aliens for actions that put Border Patrol agents at risk.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, Cruz emphasized the significance of this legislation, stating, ‘This legislation honors the sacrifice of Agent Raul Gonzalez, Jr., who lost his life pursuing individuals evading capture.’
Cruz further asserted that this initiative sends a distinct message: those who jeopardize American lives will indeed face severe repercussions. ‘This bill is a crucial step toward safeguarding our communities and ensuring that criminals can no longer take advantage of past shortcomings,’ he declared.
