Teddy Bridgewater is poised for another chapter in his NFL career as he prepares to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a move confirmed by general manager Jason Licht.
At 32 years old, Bridgewater is coming out of retirement for the second time, rejoining the league alongside quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask. Licht informed reporters on Tuesday that Bridgewater visited Tampa, and while a contract has yet to be formalized, he expressed a strong intention to sign the quarterback.
In light of these developments, Licht stated that discussions indicated Bridgewater’s addition would be beneficial to the team. He emphasized that having a seasoned player in the quarterback room would support Mayfield, noting Bridgewater’s experience and coaching abilities. Licht remarked, “We had some discussions about it, that it’d be a nice addition to the quarterback room, good for Baker. Experienced guy, obviously a smart, hell of high school coach – hell of a coach in general. Just a good addition just to have that wealth of experience there.”
While Licht did not confirm whether Bridgewater would immediately become the backup to Trask, he acknowledged that competition for the role remains open.
Bridgewater has a storied career spanning 10 NFL seasons. He first entered the league as a first-round selection by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2014 NFL Draft. Over the years, he has played for several teams, including the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, and Miami Dolphins.
In 2023, Bridgewater announced his retirement, which he made official in early 2024. Following this, he pursued a coaching position at his former high school in Miami, where he achieved notable success by leading the team to a Class 3A state championship last season.
In December, Bridgewater decided to come out of retirement and joined the Detroit Lions in a bid to assist in their playoff campaign. Throughout his career, he has maintained a record of 33 wins against 32 losses as a starter, amassing impressive statistics with 15,120 passing yards, 75 touchdowns, 47 interceptions, and a passer rating of 90.5.
Recently, Bridgewater faced suspension from his coaching position at his former high school due to allegations of providing financial benefits to players. He publicly challenged the suspension, asserting in a Facebook post that he “self-reported” the incident and affirmed his commitment to his role, stating, “I’m not going anywhere.”
This recent turn of events reflects the complexities facing athletes who transition to coaching roles, where adherence to regulations becomes crucial.
As the Buccaneers prepare for the upcoming season, Bridgewater’s experience could play a vital role in shaping the performance of the team. His leadership and knowledge of the game may provide not just support but also mentorship for younger players. Fans will be watching closely as the situation unfolds, eager to see how Bridgewater adapts once again to the pressures and expectations of an NFL environment.
Bridgewater’s determination to return to football, despite recent challenges, highlights his resilience and passion for the game. With the potential signing by the Buccaneers, the football community stands ready to witness what could be another remarkable comeback for the talented quarterback.
