Tehran Under Siege: Militias Deploy Heavy Firepower Amid Ongoing Protests

Gunfire reverberated through the streets of Tehran on Tuesday night as heavily armed militias took control of significant areas in the Iranian capital. This surge in militarization has transformed certain districts into fortified zones under heavy security measures.

Eyewitness accounts and video footage reveal that automatic weapons erupted in fire after dark. Key government buildings, state media offices, and major intersections were heavily guarded, creating a sense of unease among residents. Armored vehicles and masked fighters patrolled the streets, primarily using Toyota trucks equipped with heavy machine guns.

The sight of these trucks moving in convoys with weapons firing into the night is alarming. Audio from the videos captures the distinct sound of large-caliber weapons, underscoring the volatile environment.

According to Ali Safavi, a senior figure in the National Council of Resistance of Iran, there has been a notable deployment of armed trucks throughout Tehran. He stated that these vehicles are outfitted with heavy weaponry, including the DShK machine gun. Commenting on the situation, Safavi emphasized the involvement of foreign forces.

“They are reportedly linked to Lebanese Hezbollah and Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces. The presence of commanders who speak in Farsi highlights the significant foreign influence in this operation,” he explained.

Safavi further noted that Iran’s regime has increasingly turned to foreign proxies to maintain stability in Tehran. He estimated a deployment of at least 5,000 foreign personnel in support roles, stating, “These forces are tasked with securing government installations and media outlets, armed with Russian-made machine guns capable of firing .50 caliber rounds.”

As the night unfolded, reports indicated ongoing clashes between the troops and protesters, with fierce street battles contributing to a rising death toll among civilians.

The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported the escalating violence amid nationwide protests, now in their twenty-fourth day. The organization documented significant losses, with confirmed fatalities reaching 4,519. Furthermore, another 9,049 deaths remain under investigation, while thousands have sustained injuries or faced arrest.

HRANA also pointed to a staggering security presence throughout Tehran. Law enforcement, members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and Basij militia units patrol the streets, particularly as darkness falls. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has consistently framed the ongoing unrest as driven by external enemies conspiring against the Iranian regime. This narrative reinforces the IRGC’s heavy-handed approach to quelling dissent.

On the international stage, President Trump issued stern warnings regarding the Iranian regime’s threats, vowing decisive retaliation if necessary. “Should anything happen, we will respond overwhelmingly. Contrarily, Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the NCRI, has contested the idea that foreign military intervention could effectively dismantle the regime.
