Democratic congressional candidate Aftyn Behn did not shy away from expressing her views about Nashville just days before the crucial special election scheduled for December 2.
In a resurfaced 2020 podcast, Behn candidly stated her dislike for various aspects of the city, including its vibrant nightlife and cultural identity. She remarked, ‘I hate the city, I hate the bachelorettes, I hate the pedal taverns, I hate country music, I hate all of the things that make Nashville apparently an “it” city to the rest of the country. But I hate it.’
Aftyn Behn, a Democratic state representative and former healthcare community organizer, is contesting the election against Republican nominee Matt Van Epps to fill Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District seat. This election follows the resignation of former GOP Representative Mark Green, who left his post in June for a role in the private sector.
The 7th District spans an area between Kentucky and Alabama, characterized as solidly Republican. In the 2024 presidential election, President Donald Trump won the district by a significant margin of 22 points.
This district includes parts of Nashville, the state capital and its largest city, which serves as a national hub for the vibrant country music industry. Notably, the district covers areas in north and west Nashville, including downtown, which has long attracted tourists.
In response to Behn’s statements, the Republican National Committee expressed discontent via social media, stating, ‘The Democrat running in a special election for Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District, Aftyn Behn, is running on the message: “I hate this place, elect me!” Tennessee deserves better.’
As the special election approaches, Republican groups are investing significant resources to prevent a potential upset and maintain the GOP’s narrow majority in the House of Representatives.
Despite the uproar over her comments, Democrats remain optimistic following their recent victories in previous elections. Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin, who campaigned alongside Behn, asserted that she has ‘an excellent shot to win.’
Behn is often regarded as a rising progressive star, earning her the nickname “AOC of Tennessee” among supporters.
Republicans have also directed attention to an opinion piece Behn published in 2019, titled ‘Tennessee is a racist state, and so is its legislature,’ which appeared in The Tennessean. The RNC referenced this article through a social media post, questioning, ‘If Behn hates Tennessee so much, why is she trying to represent it?’
Kate Briefs, Behn’s campaign manager, criticized Republican efforts, stating, ‘Republicans are panicking and in a last-ditch attempt, they are distracting from the fact that Washington Republicans and Matt Van Epps are raising costs on Tennessee families.’ She emphasized that Behn aims to lower living costs for families by eliminating the state grocery tax, which has become a significant issue for many voters.
Matt Van Epps, the former commissioner of the Tennessee Department of General Services, has garnered support from Trump, who endorsed him during the primary elections. This endorsement played a crucial role in Van Epps’s victory in an 11-candidate race for the Republican nomination.
Former President Trump hosted a tele-rally for Van Epps, commenting on Behn’s political ideology and labeling her a ‘Marxist.’ He also drew connections between her and Zohran Mamdani, the socialist mayor-elect of New York City, positioning Mamdani as a face of the Democratic Party that Republicans aim to target.
Van Epps’s campaign has urged Trump to visit the district personally before the election, hoping to energize the base further.
Meanwhile, Republican-aligned groups are significantly investing in advertising to target Behn. Reports indicate that the Trump-aligned super PAC MAGA Inc. has launched a campaign with a seven-figure budget in an effort to influence the election outcome.
A Democratic strategist closely following the race highlighted the significance of the Republican spending, stating, ‘This is already a win. The fact that Republicans have spent over $2 million trying to hold a seat that Trump won by 22 points demonstrates their concern and vulnerability.’
Regardless of the election’s final outcome, Democratic leaders view this contest as a promising development in Tennessee politics, signaling a shift in the political landscape.
The developments in Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District represent broader implications for political dynamics in the region and across the nation. As candidates like Aftyn Behn emerge and garner attention, the responses from established political parties may shift and evolve in response to changing voter sentiments.
Whether Behn’s comments will hinder her campaign or energize her base remains to be seen. The upcoming election may reveal much about the future political landscape in Tennessee.
