Surveillance video captures a distressing encounter in which a group dressed in ominous Halloween masks allegedly tries to break into a Virginia family’s home, leaving the residents shaken and fearful.
On a late Tuesday evening, around 10 p.m., the three suspects confronted the front door of an Alexandria home, located approximately 10 miles from Washington, D.C. This alarming incident was reported by WUSA9.
Shayla Whiteside, who was visiting her mother at the time, recalls the moment with dread. Alongside her younger brother and their family dog, they found themselves in a terrifying situation as the intruders approached.
Initially perceiving the incident as a prank, Whiteside responded with a lighthearted “Happy Halloween.” However, the façade quickly faded as the reality of the threat became clearer.
The suspects donned menacing disguises: one wore a clown mask, a second impersonated Michael Myers from the classic horror film series, and the third executed an eerie portrayal of an evil nun. They loudly proclaimed, “It’s your worst nightmare,” while lingering outside the residence.
Despite Whiteside warning them that she was on a call with 911, the intruders showed no signs of retreat. They continued banging on the door, escalating the tension inside.
“They kept, like, knocking on the door,” Whiteside recounted. “The knocks would get harder.”
As the encounter intensified, the family received increasingly aggressive demands from the intruders. “It’s either you coming out or we’re coming in,” one suspect exclaimed, while another shouted, “Open the door!”
Reports indicate that the group then attempted to force their way into the home. Whiteside expressed her shock and fear, stating, “It’s not even a joke gone wrong. They tried to enter into the home. My heart dropped when they said they were gonna take a chair and break down the door.”
This terrifying dialogue lasted about 10 minutes, instilling fear and panic in the family. In a candid conversation with WUSA9, Whiteside reflected on the emotional toll of the night, saying, “My dad recently just died, so it’s just like I’m just glad I was there. But now she’s in fear. She doesn’t want to stay there by herself.”
Law enforcement has alerted the public that the masked individuals discarded their disguises before fleeing the area in a vehicle. The Alexandria Police Department is actively canvassing for surveillance footage that could provide more insights into the suspects’ identities.
If apprehended, the suspects could face charges, including burglary and making criminal threats, as highlighted by Alexandria Police Chief Tarrick McGuire.
In a press briefing, McGuire stressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “They began to make threatening and alarming comments to the family. Specifically, they said, ‘If you do not come out, we will come in,’ and also threatened to do bodily harm, stating that they would ultimately kill them.”
He further explained, “They attempted to enter a residence, and under Virginia state law, that constitutes burglary.” His warning to the community highlighted the risks associated with door-to-door activities during Halloween. “This is a very serious matter,” he noted.
McGuire advised homeowners to be vigilant, reminding them of their legal right to defend themselves if threatened. “Know where your children are and what they’re doing,” he urged. “Talk to them about the decisions they are making. We don’t want to get police involved in something that did not derive from criminal intent, but this incident did.”
As Halloween approaches, incidents like these serve as a reminder for residents to be cautious. Parents are encouraged to discuss safety with their children and remain aware of suspicious activities in their neighborhoods.
The Alexandria Police Department continues to work diligently on this case, urging anyone with information to come forward. The haunting reality of this attempted home invasion underscores the importance of community awareness and safety during festive occasions.
