Jacqueline Medina traveled an arduous 13 hours from Nevada to Texas to confront the man accused of murdering her daughter, Lizbeth Medina. This powerful encounter occurred on February 6, where she faced Rafael Govea Romero for the first time.
Romero, a 25-year-old undocumented immigrant from Mexico, allegedly broke into the former Edna residence of Jacqueline Medina on December 5, 2023. During this tragic incident, he fatally stabbed 16-year-old Lizbeth as she prepared for school, leaving her body in a bathtub.
Following the hearing, Jacqueline shared her experience with Fox News Digital, revealing the depth of her emotions. “This is the first time I saw him. I wanted him to notice me. Despite the pain he has inflicted, I wanted him to understand that I stand strong and that he will not win,” she explained.
Jacqueline recalled the moment she made eye contact with Romero. To her surprise, he was taller than she had imagined.
“My daughter wasn’t that tall. Just thinking about her fighting against him, I wonder what chance she had,” Jacqueline reflected. The discomfort and sorrow overshadowed her thoughts as she continued, “It was just terrible.”
In court, Jacqueline observed Romero looking down and away from her gaze. “I could sense a spark of shame in him, as if he understood the pain he caused us. He looked down the moment our eyes connected,” she said, describing the emotional intensity of the moment. “At one point, I felt overwhelmed and almost couldn’t stay in my seat. I shook uncontrollably and struggled to breathe. This grief manifests physically, and it’s just overwhelming.”
During the court proceedings in Jackson County, a judge deemed Romero competent to stand trial and tentatively set a trial date for August. Jacqueline described this decision as a relief, feeling a weight lifted off her shoulders.
“In November, I learned about the possibility of an insanity plea, which shattered my hopes. I began to lose faith in the justice system and doubted whether we would receive justice for Lizbeth,” she said. However, following Thursday’s hearing, she expressed renewed confidence that justice was within reach.
Throughout the proceedings, Jacqueline clutched a keychain emblazoned with a picture of her daughter. “Having her presence with me gave me immense strength,” she said.
On the fateful day of December 5, 2023, Jacqueline left early for work, while Lizbeth, a talented high school cheerleader aspiring to study nursing at the University of Texas at Arlington, prepared for school. Tragically, Lizbeth never made it to school or the anticipated Christmas parade practice.
When Jacqueline returned home later that day, she found her daughter lifeless in the bathtub. Following the discovery, Edna Police arrested Romero in Schulenburg, Texas, five days later.
Reports indicate that Romero was already on probation for a burglary committed in Schulenburg in 2022. Additionally, Edna Police believe that Romero may have been involved in a burglary at the Medina residence a month prior to Lizbeth’s murder.
Despite never having met Romero, Jacqueline highlighted that their home had been burglarized on November 13, 2023, raising concerns about potential stalking before the attack.
As the legal proceedings unfold, Romero has pleaded not guilty to the charges of capital murder. His defense team is actively contesting the use of certain evidence, arguing that the Edna Police Department acted unlawfully by detaining and searching Romero without probable cause.
Jacqueline remains determined to seek justice for her daughter’s untimely death. She knows the fight for accountability will be long and challenging, but her resolve remains strong. “I want people to know our story. Lizbeth was full of dreams and life, and I will ensure her memory lives on,” she declared.
As the community rallies around the Medina family, they aim to shine a light on the need for justice and reform within the legal system. The journey for Jacqueline and her supporters is just beginning, but they carry the memory of Lizbeth with them, a constant reminder of love and loss.
