Keli Rabon, a mother of two boys who narrowly escaped the severe flooding at a summer camp in Texas, shared the alarming moment she realized the situation was far more serious than she initially understood. In a heartfelt interview on ‘The Story,’ she recounted her experience with the rising waters.
“Once I received the notification from Camp Mystic that indicated my daughter was safe if I hadn’t been contacted, I grasped how critical the situation was. The initial text on July 4th had downplayed the severity of the floods,” Rabon recounted during her conversation.
Urgent Response to the Flooding Crisis
With a deep sense of urgency, Rabon made the decision to drive from Houston to Camp La Junta, where her two sons, aged 7 and 9, were staying. This camp, located only six miles from the flooded Camp Mystic, has been impacted by the tragic loss of 27 campers and counselors. Authorities have reported at least 100 fatalities due to the severe flooding.
Rabon praised the bravery and quick thinking of her sons’ camp counselors, whom she described as “kids themselves.”
As the floodwaters surged, these counselors acted swiftly to ensure the boys’ safety. “As the water began to invade the camp, the brave counselors encouraged the boys to get onto the first bunk, then onto the second. Eventually, they lifted the little ones into the rafters to keep them out of harm’s way,” Rabon explained.

Rabon noted that her youngest son was left in a state of shock from the experience. He vividly remembered the water rising ominously, even breaking a window.
Reflecting on the terrifying ordeal, she stated, “I can only imagine how horrifying this situation was for them. All of this occurred during the dark of night, with no power, compounding the fear and confusion. It is impossible to prepare for such a crisis.”
