Matcha has recently experienced a surge in popularity, particularly on social media platforms, transforming from an unsung green tea into a trendy cocktail ingredient. Despite its vibrant green hue and health claims, experts warn that indulging in matcha cocktails may not offer the health benefits some consumers expect.
Rensel Cabrera, the bar director at The Sylvester in Miami, shared insights about this trend. He noted that the incorporation of matcha into mixed drinks initially stemmed from a creative exploration rather than a health-focused initiative.
“When we were revamping our menu, we started examining various trends in cocktail styles and ingredients,” Cabrera explained. “Matcha emerged as one of the top trends, alongside the classic espresso martini.”
Notably, Cabrera’s establishment does not serve traditional coffee or tea beverages. Nevertheless, he believed that matcha’s striking color could enhance the visual appeal of a cocktail. “As a cocktail bar, we don’t usually offer teas, lattes, or coffee. Still, we thought it could be an exciting ingredient to play with,” he mentioned.
A year later, his creation, the “Dama Verde,” a cocktail made with matcha-infused honeydew vodka, has become one of the bar’s most popular offerings. “People tend to drink quite liberally at night,” he noted. “If they’re going to indulge, why not make it a touch healthier?”
However, this rise in matcha cocktails raises questions about the balance between wellness and indulgence. The juxtaposition of caffeine from matcha and alcohol has garnered attention from health professionals.
Lauren Manaker, a South Carolina dietitian-nutritionist, emphasized that the perceived health benefits of matcha diminish when mixed with alcohol. “While matcha boasts numerous health advantages when consumed solo, those benefits can evaporate once it’s mixed with liquor,” she stated.
In New York City’s East Village, the “Matcha Latte” at Bananas has gained immense popularity. Its creator, general manager Dania Kim, revealed that her approach was not to chase trends but to innovate flavor profiles based on seasonal inspirations.
“Creating this drink wasn’t about jumping on a bandwagon,” Kim elaborated. “It was more about embracing the summer weather and using flavors I sincerely enjoy.”
Having grown up with matcha, Kim was largely unaware of its rising status among cocktail lovers, particularly the Generation Z demographic. “I realized that it was primarily the Gen Z crowd going wild for the drink,” she remarked.
Despite the health halo often associated with matcha, Kim acknowledged some limitations. “It’s important to understand that while this drink is touted as healthier, it is still alcoholic,” she noted. Many of her younger guests are drawn to the concept of a cocktail that feels better for their health.
Ng, co-founder of Bananas, noted that much of matcha’s allure is its visual appeal. “When dining out, people often eat with their eyes first,” he explained. “Seeing ‘Matcha Latte’ on a menu often evokes thoughts of a comforting late-night drink.”
Cabrera’s Miami cocktail, which features a sprinkle of matcha powder and citric acid, continues to attract attention, although it may raise concerns for those sensitive to caffeine. “Some customers hesitate to order it due to the caffeine content,” he shared.
Although the drink is not specifically marketed toward women, it appears to resonate more with that demographic according to Cabrera. “It’s almost like a double dose of matcha,” he pointed out. “The matcha is both in and out of the drink.”
For those prioritizing their health, the appeal of matcha cocktails is evident. Manaker explained that these beverages might seem like a suitable middle ground. “People aren’t knocking back shots,” she said. “And while they may receive some antioxidants with their drink, it’s vital to remember they’re still consuming alcohol, which poses risks to our liver and brain health.”
The recent trend of mixing matcha with alcohol asks consumers to weigh the benefits and drawbacks. Although drinking a delicious matcha cocktail may feel like a step towards healthier habits, understanding the overall impact on well-being is crucial.
In summary, as bartenders experiment with matcha and consumers flock to these trendy concoctions, vigilance about the health implications is essential. While enjoying a matcha cocktail can be a delightful experience, awareness of its effects on health is equally important.
