Representative Thomas Massie shared with Fox News Digital on Thursday that his campaign secured $261,000 in donations after President Trump singled him out for opposing a critical government funding measure.
In just three days, Massie reported receiving funds from 3,203 individual donors, claiming this achievement as a new fundraising record for his campaign. He noted that this influx has pushed his cash reserves to over $1.1 million.
Trump’s criticism of Massie appeared in a Truth Social post on Monday, prompting the congressman to respond via Twitter the following day by appealing for campaign contributions.
Massie stated, “I’ve drawn opponents in my last three primaries who knew they couldn’t run to the right of me, so they ran to the Trump of me.” This comment highlighted the unique dynamics of his electoral challenges.
He continued, “Overwhelmingly, in each instance, voters in Kentucky rejected them because I have a decade of consistently putting America and my constituents first.” In previous contests, none of his challengers garnered more than 20% of the vote, thanks to the substantial resources invested in his campaigns. For instance, in the 2020 primary, his allies contributed $2 million after Trump attacked him over his opposition to COVID-19 bailouts. With this context, Massie expressed the seriousness of the current threat and urged grassroot support.
The amount Massie raised spiked after he initially tweeted on Wednesday that he had achieved $205,000 in support. He enthusiastically declared, “I’ve received an amazing outpouring of support since I was attacked for voting No on the Biden-$-level CR. In fact, we just hit $205,000 from 2,500 grassroots donors! Can you help me send a ‘huge’ message by reaching $250,000 before the 48-hour mark?”—a clear strategy to mobilize his supporters.
Earlier on that Wednesday, Massie announced, “Y’all sent $175,000 to my campaign in the last 36 hours! For the first time, my cash on hand is over $1,000,000. It’s a great start, but I’m going to need more if POTUS makes good on his threat to retaliate for my vote. Please help me set a 48-hour record,” revealing the urgency of his funding needs.
When questioned about whether these funds could be used for a potential Senate campaign, Massie responded positively, indicating that he was open to the opportunity.
Having served in the U.S. House of Representatives for over ten years, Massie recently conducted a poll on his Twitter account, asking his followers if he should stay in the House, run for Senate in 2026, or seek the governorship in 2027.
With the threat of a partial government shutdown looming, Trump critiqued Massie’s position on funding, stating, “HE SHOULD BE PRIMARIED, and I will lead the charge against him.” In his Truth Social post, Trump described Massie as a grandstander causing unnecessary trouble, comparing him to Liz Cheney, who famously lost her primary bid in 2022. Trump asserted that the people of Kentucky would not tolerate Massie’s actions.
Following Trump’s barrage, Massie sought grassroots donations in response to the attack on his character. He tweeted, “Why don’t more Representatives stand on principle? Because telling the truth can get you in hot water. I’m going to need your help. I will run again because we need at least one person in Congress who won’t cave.” His message was clear: he wished to rally support from his political base.
Trump continued to target Massie on X, criticizing him for votes against critical measures. He stated, “Congressman Thomas Massie voted to delay the Debt Ceiling Bill from the Biden Administration to the Trump Administration, without getting anything for this horrendously stupid move.” This comment raised questions about Massie’s legislative decisions and their implications.
Trump claimed that Massie’s failure to support the Continuing Resolution demonstrates his inconsistency. He stated, “Now, and virtually on every other vote, he’s a very simple, ‘NO.’” His remarks emphasized the ongoing tension and scrutiny surrounding Massie’s legislative record.
Despite Trump’s criticisms, Massie defended his voting record. He labeled Trump’s post as misleading, stating, “This tweet from Trump’s account is very misleading. I never voted for a CR that became law.” Massie highlighted his consistent stance on fiscal responsibility, emphasizing his commitment to true conservative values.
Ultimately, Massie became the only Republican in the House to oppose the Trump-backed government funding measure during the recent vote, underlining his position in the ongoing political conflict.
Trump continued his critique in a subsequent post, questioning Massie’s commitment to Republican values. He declared, “But can’t give us a simple Continuing Resolution vote allowing us the time necessary to come up with a GREAT, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL??? Republicans only ‘NO Vote. GRANDSTANDER!” Trump’s consistent targeting of Massie raises questions about the future of their relationship and the dynamics within the Republican Party.
Massie has previously faced similar challenges, having won decisively against Trump-backed opponents in past primaries. In Kentucky’s 2020 primary, he secured nearly 81% of the vote, demonstrating his stronghold in the district. Trump endorsed Massie during the 2022 primary, where he secured over 75% of the vote.
As Massie navigates this contentious landscape, his political future remains uncertain. With speculation about potential Senate and gubernatorial runs, he faces pressure to maintain support from his constituents against the backdrop of Trump’s pointed critiques.
With the Republican primary season approaching, all eyes will be on Massie as he prepares for what could be a challenging electoral climate.
