A counterterrorism expert warns that Iranian sleeper cells may be hiding in plain sight, posing a threat to rural areas across the United States. Jonathan Gilliam, a former FBI special agent, emphasizes that these potentially dangerous groups could take action in response to recent geopolitical tensions.
On June 22, the U.S. military conducted strikes on several Iranian nuclear sites. This military intervention prompted the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to issue a National Terrorism Advisory System Bulletin, highlighting an increased risk for Iranian-backed or domestic terrorism.
According to the bulletin, the potential for violent extremists within the U.S. to mobilize independently grows if Iranian leadership issues aCall for retaliatory violence against U.S. targets. The bulletin notes that Iran maintains a longstanding commitment to targeting U.S. government officials, particularly those deemed responsible for the death of a high-ranking Iranian military commander in January 2020.
Jonathan Gilliam sheds light on the unsettling reality that these sleeper cells could already be operating in American communities. He stated, “Where these sleeper cells may be is in plain sight. And that’s the real terrifying part of this is that putting people in place, as we’ve seen over the past four years, everyone’s scrambling because certain amounts of people could come in here and get in here.”
Gilliam asserts that current U.S. border policies under the Biden administration have facilitated the entry of Iranian illegal immigrants. This situation creates an environment conducive to the establishment of sleeper cells in the U.S.
He elaborated, saying, “They could even go to the border and say they want to seek asylum. Instead of putting them into DHS housing or ICE housing, we hold them there so they can have their first appearance. They should be vetted to determine if they can receive asylum.”
In response to the heightened security concerns following the U.S. attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has intensified its enforcement efforts targeting Iranian illegal immigrants.
Recent reports indicate that since June 18, over 130 Iranian nationals have been arrested. Additionally, approximately 670 Iranians currently remain in ICE custody as federal authorities strengthen their crackdown against illegal immigration.
Gilliam highlights the potential risks associated with rural areas, stating that sleeper cells may choose to target these regions due to their relatively low level of security. He comments, “There is a possibility that sleeper cells could target more rural states instead of a large city. In fact, considering the evolution of attacks by fundamental Islamic attackers we’ve seen in Israel on October 7th, 2023, and in India this year, it is possible that a similar attack could happen at a rural, outdoor entertainment venue or a populated vacation spot.”
The implications of these threats are significant, calling for heightened awareness and vigilance from both law enforcement and community members. The potential for sleeper cells to exploit weaknesses in rural security makes it crucial for local agencies to enhance their preparedness.
Experts suggest that increased community engagement and collaboration between federal and local law enforcement could improve the detection and prevention of potential threats. Regular training and exercises designed to prepare first responders for rapid response to any emerging threats are essential.
Additionally, public awareness campaigns could play a vital role in identifying suspicious activities within communities. Encouraging residents to be vigilant and report unusual behaviors can aid in thwarting potential attacks.
As tensions with Iran continue to evolve, the threat posed by sleeper cells represents a pressing concern for numerous stakeholders, including national security agencies and local communities alike. The ramifications of complacency in such an environment could be dire.
A strategic, well-coordinated response at all levels of law enforcement is essential to mitigate risks. While the likelihood of an attack cannot be predicted with certainty, proactive measures can help deter such threats before they materialize.
It is crucial to remain informed and cautious in this ever-changing landscape of national security threats. By fostering community resilience and preparedness, the United States can better safeguard against the potential dangers posed by sleeper cells and other extremist groups.
