A Minnesota man is now in custody after the alleged shooting spree that left two state lawmakers and their spouses dead on Saturday morning. Vance Luther Boelter, 57, was apprehended in Sibley County following an intense two-day manhunt and now faces multiple murder charges at both state and federal levels.
Authorities have charged Boelter with the murders of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman, a Democrat, and her husband, Mark, who were attacked in their home located in Brooklyn Park, Minneapolis. In addition, he is accused of shooting state Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, in their nearby Champlin home.
On Sunday, the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office reported that Boelter verbally identified himself as the suspect to authorities who were searching for him.
The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office shared strong sentiments on social media, declaring Boelter as “the face of evil.” They expressed gratitude for the unified efforts of various law enforcement agencies and the community in capturing the suspected assailant, emphasizing the progress made toward justice.
As details have emerged, court records have begun to shed light on the tragic sequence of events that unfolded on that fateful Saturday.
At approximately 2:06 a.m., authorities responded to a 911 call made by the Hoffmans’ daughter, who reported that her parents had been shot in their Champlin home. Both individuals were rushed to a nearby hospital and are reportedly on the road to recovery.
Sen. Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat from Minnesota, received updates from Yvette Hoffman, indicating that John had been shot nine times, while Yvette had been hit eight times. In her message, Yvette described their families as grateful yet devastated by the loss of their friends.
The heroism displayed by the Hoffman family during the incident, as reiterated by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, likely saved several lives. Walz indicated that the latest updates suggested Sen. Hoffman was progressing toward recovery after undergoing numerous surgeries.
Following his actions at the Hoffman residence, Boelter made his way to the home of another Minnesota state representative. This event occurred just before 2:24 a.m. Despite knocking on the door, he found no one home, as the representative and spouse were away on vacation. Authorities have described the footage from the incident as haunting, as Boelter was still clad in the police uniform and mask used during the shootings.
Just minutes later, Boelter allegedly headed to a state senator’s home in New Hope, Minnesota, where a wellness check had already been initiated by local police. Upon arrival, officers discovered Boelter’s vehicle parked in front of the senator’s residence, but the suspect had already fled the scene by the time law enforcement arrived.
At around 3:35 a.m., Boelter arrived at the Hortman residence, where he allegedly shot both Melissa and Mark. Upon law enforcement’s arrival, officers witnessed him shoot one of the victims through an open door. The victims were found deceased inside the residence.
The police exchanged gunfire with Boelter before he managed to escape the area.
In light of the escalating situation, the Brooklyn Park Police Department issued a shelter-in-place order for residents in the vicinity, urging them to remain indoors for safety.
Following the shootings, Boelter sent alarming texts to family members as early as 6:18 a.m. In one message, he stated, “Dad went to war last night… I don’t wanna say more because I don’t wanna implicate anybody.” He also texted his wife, expressing remorse and warning of potential armed individuals arriving at their home.
Boelter met with an unidentified witness around 7 a.m. at a bus stop in north Minneapolis, carrying two duffel bags and attempting to negotiate the purchase of an electric bike. After both boarded the bus, the suspect then expressed interest in acquiring the witness’s vehicle, a Buick sedan.
Before long, he drove to a local bank, withdrawing $2,000 from an ATM while wearing a cowboy hat, as seen in surveillance footage. He reportedly paid the witness for the bike and car, totaling around $900.
As the day unfolded, officials publicly identified Vance Luther Boelter as the suspect, making headlines for his alleged involvement in the tragic events. Information indicated that he was previously appointed to the nonpartisan workforce development board by both Governor Tim Walz and former Governor Mark Dayton.
Early Sunday morning, authorities received tips regarding a man riding an e-bike roughly two miles from Boelter’s residence. In response, law enforcement reinvigorated their search efforts.
Sibley County authorities issued a public alert for residents, cautioning them to be on the lookout for Boelter as the search continued. A visual search led to the discovery of Boelter’s vehicle and gear, prompting multiple law enforcement agencies to mobilize their resources.
A news conference was held on Sunday evening, characterized as a “fluid” and ongoing situation. Law enforcement officials continuously updated the public regarding their search efforts.
Just after 9 p.m., Boelter was found in a field approximately one mile from his home. A nearby resident, who observed suspicious behavior, alerted the authorities, leading to his swift arrest.
The Brooklyn Park Police Department Chief provided details on the extensive manhunt, highlighting the collaboration of over 20 different SWAT teams across several jurisdictions. As the situation evolved, Boelter faced serious felony charges for second-degree murder with intent.
By June 16, first-degree murder charges were pursued by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, reiterating the seriousness of this case. Bail was set at a staggering $5 million as the community grappled with the traumatic events that unfolded.
Authorities have emphasized the need for community safety and vigilance, firmly establishing the risk posed by Boelter’s alleged activities.
This tragic episode underscores the urgent need for discussions regarding political discourse and community safety. The dedicated actions of law enforcement and community members reflect a collective commitment to ensuring justice and safety for all. As the legal processes unfold, the community continues to reflect on the importance of solidarity in the face of tragedy.
