For nearly three decades, Todd and Julie Chrisley have proven their commitment to each other amidst various trials and tribulations. However, in January 2023, their bond faced an unprecedented challenge as they embarked on separate prison sentences for tax evasion and fraud charges related to their reality television fame.
In an exclusive conversation with Fox News Digital, the couple discussed the difficulties they confronted while striving to nurture their marriage during this unexpected separation. Promoting their new docuseries, The Chrisleys: Back to Reality, alongside their family, they reflected on the impact of confinement on their relationship.
Julie explained the heartbreak of being disconnected from her husband for a staggering 28 months. Despite being able to see and communicate with their children, Todd and Julie found it nearly impossible to maintain a conversation. They relied on outdated email correspondence, which only allowed them to send messages every few days. This method starkly contrasted with their previous interactions.
Todd described the emotional struggle of being separated from Julie, whom he had been with for nearly 30 years. He expressed that his thoughts never strayed far from her presence. He said that she remained in his mind throughout each day, emphasizing how crucial their memories were during that tough period.
“I used to say in my emails, I thank God for my mind and all the memories we’ve created. Those memories sustained me throughout my time apart from her,” Todd revealed.
In recounting the moments that bolstered his spirit during incarceration, Todd mentioned how thinking about their children and the family experiences they shared provided comfort. During this separation, he often found himself focusing on the joy and love that defined their life together.
“It was never a question of whether our marriage would survive,” Todd stated. “It was about figuring out how to pick up the pieces and rebuild our life from where we left off.”
In May 2023, Todd and Julie received pardons from President Trump, which allowed them to return to their family life. During a phone call with the couple’s children, Trump remarked on the significance of their release. His encouragement sparked joy, akin to a miracle in their lives.
Reflecting on their unexpected freedom, Todd described waking up on May 28 not anticipating a transformative day. Instead of his regular routine, he faced the shock of being pardoned and suddenly reunited with his family.
“When I go to bed the night before expecting yet another monotonous day in prison, life surprises you. It’s incredible how quickly circumstances can shift,” he recounted.
Following their release, both Todd and Julie described a challenging transition back to everyday life. Julie expressed the surreal feeling of freedom after being incarcerated, revealing that it took time to adjust to their new reality. She noted the need to shed the protective mentality they had adopted while in prison.
“You really have to remind yourself that this is your new reality. I’m grateful for each day but also unsure about letting my guard down,” she said.
Todd further elaborated on their differing mindsets during their prison sentences. He mentioned his determination to communicate regularly with their children, providing him with motivation and hope. The challenges of prison life also highlighted disparities in communication, particularly affecting Julie.
In July, Todd and Julie revealed in their podcast that they had spoken to other women who had been incarcerated. To their surprise, many shared an unsettling consensus. Adjusting to life outside of prison can sometimes prove more challenging than their experiences inside.
“Not that prison life is ideal, but it’s often simpler than the chaos that exists outside,” Todd commented. “The emotional and psychological toll we face after release is something we are still processing.”
As they move forward, the couple is set to return to the small screen with their new series, The Chrisleys: Back to Reality. This two-night event will premiere on Lifetime, showcasing their journey from incarceration to rebuilding a life filled with hope and resilience.
After weathering the storms of legal challenges and separation, Todd and Julie Chrisley continue to demonstrate their unwavering commitment to each other. Their story serves as an inspiring reminder of the strength of love and family, even in the face of adversity.
The premiere of The Chrisleys: Back to Reality on September 1 and 2 at 8 PM ET promises to guide viewers through their reintroduction to life as a family. As the remaining episodes unfold, fans will witness how they blend their past experiences with hope for a brighter future.
