The Dallas Cowboys will travel to Chicago to face the Bears in a highly anticipated match on Sunday, marking this as “America’s Game of the Week” on FOX. The Bears are hoping to secure their first win of the season, while the Cowboys seek a second consecutive victory.
Tom Brady, the lead analyst for FOX’s NFL coverage, will join play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt in the broadcast booth for this exciting event. As the game approaches, Brady reminisced about one of the more unfortunate moments in his illustrious NFL career, recalling a significant oversight from his last appearance at historic Soldier Field.
Back in 2020, while playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Brady faced a moment of confusion when he mistook a third down for a fourth down. This critical mental error unfolded during a critical moment of the game.
“You know, sometimes I even mess things up,” Brady shared during the episode of “Story Time with Tom,” while reviewing a video replay of his blunder. “And I did on that day.”
During this tense game, the Buccaneers found themselves trailing the Bears by a single point with less than a minute remaining. Brady’s pass intended for Cameron Brate fell incomplete as Tampa Bay aimed to reach field goal range. Despite the urgency, Brady remained on the field and, in a moment of confusion, held up four fingers — indicating that he believed the team had one more attempt to secure the necessary yardage for their kicker.
“Broken up on third down,” Brady remarked humorously. “What’s the next play? Fourth down? I thought what happened on third down was the incompletion to Cam Brate.”
Following that game, the Bucs did not return to Chicago for another matchup, leaving Brady to reflect on his mistake. Nearly five years later, he openly admits disappointment in not being aware of the down count.
“I kind of couldn’t believe it that I forgot,” he expressed candidly. “I think I actually clocked a ball. That was a bad mess-up. Bad for the quarterback to know what down it is, that’s for sure.”
Brady added with a touch of humor, “If they gave us a fifth down, I maybe would’ve converted on fourth down and moved the sticks.”
Despite this notable slip-up, Brady’s inaugural season with the Buccaneers proved to be highly successful. He ultimately clinched the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the seventh time in his remarkable career, steering the team to victory in Super Bowl LV.
The matchup between the Cowboys and Bears is set to kick off at 4:25 p.m. ET on FOX on September 21.
