Donald Trump’s former border czar, Tom Homan, has expressed his determination to investigate New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy’s controversial comments regarding an allegedly undocumented immigrant residing in his home. Murphy’s statements appeared to challenge the federal administration to intervene and apprehend the individual.
Homan criticized Governor Murphy’s remarks, labeling them as “pretty foolish.” He indicated, “We won’t let it go. We’ll look into it.” Homan emphasized that if the governor is knowingly harboring an illegal immigrant, such actions contravene Title 8, United States Code 1324, which prohibits the concealment of undocumented individuals. He stated on Monday evening during an appearance on the show “Hannity,” “I will seek prosecution, or the secretary will seek prosecution.”
Homan further noted, “Maybe he’s bluffing. If he’s not, we’ll deal with that.” This comment hints at a serious inquiry into the implications of the governor’s words.
In an interview with the activist group Blue Wave New Jersey, Murphy discussed the situation without going into detail. He mentioned a person within their community whose immigration status was uncertain and commented, “Let’s have her live at our house above our garage.” Murphy closed his remarks with a bold assertion: “Good luck to the feds coming in to try to get her.” This statement seemed to suggest support for individuals who may be in the country unlawfully.
A source close to Governor Murphy later clarified the situation, stating, “No one ever actually moved into his home, so not for a month, not for a week, not for an hour, not for a day.” The source insisted that Murphy was addressing a broader context, referring to someone concerned about their immigration status. They mentioned that the governor had merely suggested the possibility of offering housing to this individual.
Moreover, the source emphasized, “The person wasn’t undocumented. The person was a legal resident of the United States of America.” This clarification aimed to alleviate concerns about the legitimacy of the governor’s comments and his actions.
The exchange between Homan and Murphy underscores the ongoing tension surrounding immigration policy in the United States. As states navigate their roles in immigration enforcement, the implications of public statements become increasingly significant. Homan’s calls for prosecution reflect a broader national dialogue on how local governments interact with federal immigration laws.
This incident signifies the complexity of immigration discussions in America today. As local leaders, like Governor Murphy, express their views on immigrant support, federal officials, represented by figures like Homan, scrutinize these positions closely. The outcome of this debate could have lasting repercussions for both politicians and the individuals affected by their policies.
