The leaderboard for the 2025 PGA Championship has left many spectators puzzled. The demanding layout of Quail Hollow Club became evident during the opening round, particularly at the notorious 16th hole, which proved to be a formidable test for the top three golfers in the world.
Ranked sequentially as number one through three in the Official World Golf Ranking, Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and Xander Schauffele all completed their rounds with a double bogey on the par-4, 535-yard 16th hole. This shared misfortune highlighted the singular difficulties presented by this specific hole during Thursday’s tournament.
Throughout the tournament, viewers observed the challenges faced by these elite players as they approached the 16th hole. McIlroy set the tone with a wayward tee shot that veered left, landing dangerously close to the water hazard. Although his ball found the rough, the challenging lie prevented him from advancing much beyond 20 yards into the fairway.
Attempting to recover, McIlroy’s subsequent approach shot veered right of the green. The placement of the flag at the back left corner made it especially difficult for him to secure a bogey. Facing a 12-foot putt to salvage his score, McIlroy unfortunately missed, resulting in a double bogey.
Scheffler and Schauffele displayed more control off the tee, yet they too encountered difficulties in reaching the green in regulation. The slippery green, accentuated by water surrounding the hole, contributed to their struggles as they both overhit their approach shots.
As the hole progressed, both Scheffler and Schauffele faced penalties that severely impacted their chances of a strong finish. Scheffler found himself with a daunting 52-foot putt just to card a bogey but instead ended up needing a seven-footer, leading to another double. Schauffele, on the other hand, managed to two-putt from approximately 34 feet but could not escape the hole unscathed.
Despite his struggles on the 16th, Scheffler performed relatively better than his counterparts. He concluded his opening round tied for 19th with a score of 2-under. Schauffele finished at 1-over, while McIlroy, who recently triumphed at the Masters, fell to 3-over with a round of 74.
After his round, Scheffler shared insights about his difficulties on the 16th hole, attributing his challenges to the infamous “mud ball.” He expressed his frustrations candidly, stating the unpredictability that comes from hitting the ball in the fairway and still not knowing where it will land. Scheffler noted, “You spend your whole life trying to learn how to control a golf ball, and due to a rules decision, all of a sudden you have absolutely no control over where that golf ball goes.” His comments underscore the complexities that professional golfers navigate throughout a tournament.
Interestingly, Scheffler, McIlroy, and Schauffele were not the only top-tier golfers struggling at Quail Hollow. Other prominent names like Bryson DeChambeau, Max Homa, Jordan Spieth, and Brooks Koepka faced similar challenges, each finishing over par. Phil Mickelson encountered a particularly rough patch, carding an 8-over 79, which may jeopardize his chances of making the cut by Friday.
In stark contrast to the misfortunes of the top players, American golfer Ryan Gerard seized the opportunity to lead for most of the day, finishing with an impressive score of 5-under 66. Australian Cam Davis closely matched him, also achieving a score of 5-under despite a bogey on the final hole that could have left him at 6-under.
The juxtaposition of struggling giants against emerging talents illustrates the unpredictable nature of golf. As the tournament continues, fans eagerly await to see how these events will unfold.
