A North Carolina community is in deep mourning following the tragic death of firefighter Jaywon Lyons while on a family vacation in Turks and Caicos. The incident occurred during a snorkeling excursion, which ended in heartbreak for his loved ones.
Lyons lost his life earlier this month shortly after taking a family photo, according to his girlfriend Sonya Moore, who provided her account to The Greenville Daily Reflector. The incident shocked those close to him, highlighting the love and support within their community.
“I rushed over and I literally couldn’t even stand while they were doing CPR,” Moore shared, recalling the desperate moments following the accident. “I had my parents take my son, and I just remained with him. We tried to get him stable. He was stable for a while.” Despite the efforts of emergency responders, the situation took a turn for the worse.
Authorities rushed Lyons to a nearby hospital, with Moore desperately attempting to arrange an ICU flight back to the United States before the situation deteriorated. Despite their hopes, medical staff could not save him.
Lyons had previously served with the Little River Volunteer Fire Department. He was known for his dedication, deploying to assist with relief efforts following Hurricane Helene, and working with various fire departments throughout North Carolina during his career.
The tragedy of Lyons’ death was communicated to the community through a Facebook post from the Red Oak Community Rural Fire Department. The post stated, “We are sorry to report the loss of our brother Red Oak Firefighter Jay Lyons today in a tragic accident while he was on vacation outside of the country. Jay was well-liked here at Red Oak, and he made a lasting impression on everyone.”
People who knew Lyons described him as an optimistic individual who cherished his family. The loss is particularly profound as he leaves behind two young daughters, ages three and one.
In a heartfelt tribute, Edgecombe County also remembered Lyons in a Facebook post. They honored him as one of the county’s first firefighters, stating, “As one of Edgecombe County’s first firefighters, he served with courage, kindness, and a heart for others. His impact was felt far beyond our team, and all who knew him admired and loved him.”
A community fundraiser, GoFundMe titled “Continued help for Jaywon’s Family,” has been initiated to support the family during this tragic time. The campaign notes that Lyons’ body was returned to North Carolina on June 23, allowing family and friends to pay their respects.
The loss of Jaywon Lyons serves as a poignant reminder of the risks first responders take and the bonds they foster within their communities. As they come together to support his family, many reflect on the life he lived and the legacy he leaves behind.
