At least ten people were killed, with numerous others injured, during a harrowing school shooting in central Sweden on Tuesday. This devastating incident has been reported by police, marking a dark chapter in the nation’s history.
The shooting occurred at the Risbergska School in Örebro, prompting police to advise local residents to remain clear of the vicinity. The identification of the deceased individuals has not been disclosed, and it remains uncertain whether the shooter is among those receiving medical attention at nearby hospitals.
Risbergska is an adult education center designed for individuals who have not completed primary or secondary school. Additionally, the institution offers Swedish language classes tailored for migrants, serving as a vital resource for the community.
The local police chief, Roberto Eid Forest, described the investigation as “somewhat unclear.” He indicated that authorities are still trying to determine whether the shooting occurred within the school premises and if there are additional perpetrators involved.
Among those trapped inside the school was Andreas Sundling, 28, who recounted the chaos: “We heard three bangs and loud screams,” he declared in an interview with Expressen newspaper. He described the tense atmosphere as they awaited evacuation.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson condemned the incident, referring to it as “the worst mass shooting in Swedish history.” This declaration underlines the severity of the situation and the profound loss experienced by the victims’ families.
As the tragic news unfolds, police have yet to reveal a motive behind the shooting. Furthermore, they have not classified the act as terrorism, leaving the public and the families of victims seeking answers.
Teacher Lena Warenmark shared her perspective on the harrowing events, noting that the campus was unusually quiet due to many students leaving early for a national test. She vividly recalled hearing what she believed were approximately ten gunshots.
Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer acknowledged the gravity of the violence in Örebro. He stated, “The reports of violence in Örebro are very serious. The police are on site, and the operation is in full swing,” emphasizing the urgent response from law enforcement.
