Tragedy Strikes Texas High School Track Meet as 16-Year-Old Athlete Fatally Stabbed

A heartbreaking incident unfolded during a championship track meet in Texas on Wednesday morning, claiming the life of a 16-year-old athlete. This tragic event took place at the University Interscholastic League’s District 11-5A championship held at Kuykendall Stadium.

The victim, identified as Austin Metcalf, an athlete from Frisco Memorial High School, was stabbed during the competition. Despite the immediate response from emergency services, the Frisco Police confirmed that Metcalf succumbed to his injuries even after lifesaving measures were implemented.

Details of the Incident

The Frisco Police Department has placed 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony, a member of a rival team, under arrest and charged him with first-degree murder. Reports indicate that the incident occurred around 10 a.m., igniting shock and disbelief among the student-athletes and spectators present.

Frisco Memorial Principal Brook Fesco shared the devastating news with the school community in an email. She revealed that Metcalf, a junior who also participated in the football team, tragically lost his life during what should have been a day of celebration and achievement.

Immediate Impact on the Meet

In light of the tragic episode, the championship meet was promptly suspended. The Frisco Independent School District announced that the stadium was secured and all attendees were safely returned to their home campuses aboard district buses. This swift action aimed to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students involved.

Principal Fesco conveyed the school’s commitment to supporting students through this overwhelming grief. In her communication, she stated that the school would acknowledge Metcalf’s death during the second period and emphasized that counselors would be available throughout the day to assist students.
