An aspiring firefighter has died following a snowboarding accident while vacationing at a ski resort in eastern California. The incident occurred over the weekend at the popular Kirkwood Mountain Resort.
Roman Lacayo, 25, suffered significant head injuries during the accident. His death was confirmed by the Alpine County Sheriff’s Office through an official statement.
On Saturday, Kirkwood Ski Patrol responded quickly to reports of a medical incident on the resort’s intermediate trail. They transported Lacayo to the Barton Medical Clinic, located at the base area of the resort. A spokesperson for the resort confirmed this to Fox News Digital.
Authorities received a call to the clinic around 12:20 p.m. regarding the snowboarding accident. Tragically, Lacayo was pronounced dead just before 1 p.m.
The Alpine County Sheriff and Coroner’s Office has not yet released further details regarding the circumstances of Lacayo’s accident. Friends and family are still in shock over the sudden loss.
Lacayo was reportedly visiting the resort with his girlfriend and friends at the time of the accident. According to KCRA-TV, he fell while snowboarding and sustained the fatal injuries.
In a heartfelt statement to Fox News Digital, Ricky Newberry, the vice president and general manager of Kirkwood, expressed condolences to Lacayo’s family and friends. He stated, “On behalf of the full team here at Kirkwood, we extend our deepest sympathy and support to the guest’s family and friends. Our thoughts are with all those affected during this difficult time.”
Family members of Lacayo shared their deep sorrow over the unexpected tragedy. He had recently graduated from a fire academy in Southern California and was determined to realize his dream of becoming a firefighter. Nathan Clardy, Lacayo’s father, told KCRA-TV about his son’s aspirations and the heartbreak of not being there for him during the accident.
“It’s heartbreaking because, as a dad, I wasn’t there with him. I know there’s nothing I could have changed, but just not being there with him,” Clardy said, expressing the profound grief felt by the family.
In the days leading up to his untimely death, Lacayo took significant steps towards his career in firefighting. Reports indicate that he had submitted an application to join a fire department just two days before the accident occurred.
Clardy mentioned the logistical challenges facing their family as they make arrangements to transport Lacayo’s remains back to their home in Corona. The emotional toll of the situation has made this process a “logistical nightmare,” he explained.
The father spoke fondly of his son, stating, “He embodies what we call service above self. Even prior to the fire service, his natural instinct was to take care of other people.”
The tragic event serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with snow sports. Ski resorts attract thousands of visitors each year, and while many enjoy safe experiences, accidents can occur unexpectedly. It is essential for snowboarders and skiers to take necessary precautions and stay vigilant on the slopes.
As this community mourns the loss of a young man with a promising future, a heartfelt discussion around safety and recreational awareness continues. At the heart of this tragedy is a family grieving for their son, who was on the cusp of fulfilling his dreams.
Lacayo’s life, though cut short, has left a lasting impression on those who knew him. Friends and family remember him not only as an aspiring firefighter but also as a caring individual who put others before himself. His journey signifies a commitment to service and highlights the importance of pursuing one’s passions.
As the investigations proceed, the memory of Roman Lacayo will remain alive in the hearts of many, serving as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of support within the community.
