A mother and her two young daughters lost their lives in Brooklyn on Saturday when a driver operating with a suspended license allegedly struck them in a crosswalk, a situation described by New York City Mayor Eric Adams as a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions.
According to New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the accident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. in the Midwood neighborhood. During a press conference, Tisch characterized the incident as horrific and stated it was caused by a driver who should not have been on the road.
The driver involved, identified as 32-year-old Miriam Yarimi, reportedly collided with a Toyota Camry transporting a rideshare driver and another mother with three children before hitting the 35-year-old victim and her daughters aged six and eight. Following the impact, the Audi driven by Yarimi overturned.
The mother and her daughters were pronounced dead at the scene. The mother’s surviving child, a four-year-old boy, was rushed to Maimonides Medical Center and remains in critical condition. Meanwhile, the 62-year-old rideshare driver sustained injuries that were serious enough to require transport to Coney Island Hospital, but he is currently in stable condition. His passengers, a mother and three children, were taken to Kings County Hospital with only minor injuries.
Fire department personnel extricated Yarimi from her vehicle before she was transported to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn, where she is also reported to be in stable condition. The investigation is ongoing, particularly regarding the light sequence at the intersection where the accident occurred. Tisch noted that speed may have contributed to the incident, and investigators are currently working to determine whether Yarimi ran a red light.
A preliminary breath test was administered to check for signs of intoxication, but results have yet to be publicly shared.
Mayor Adams expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing the pain felt by both the city and the Midwood community. He lamented the loss of life, framing it as an inconceivable tragedy: a mother out for a leisurely stroll met with such an abrupt and horrifying fate.
During the press conference, Adams pointed out the wider implications of the accident, stating, “This is extremely concerning and painful, not only to the city of New York in general, but specifically to a very close-knit community.” He added that the entire city stands in support of the grieving families, highlighting the need for compassion during this difficult time.
In an effort to show solidarity, Adams mentioned plans to visit the affected family at a local hospital later that day. As the investigation continues, the community remains united in mourning, grappling with the loss of two innocent lives and the traumatic impact of this tragic event.
The tragic circumstances of this incident have reignited discussions regarding road safety and the pressing need for stricter enforcement of existing regulations. As New York City contemplates measures to enhance pedestrian safety, this heartbreaking situation serves as a poignant reminder of the potential consequences of reckless driving.
In light of this tragedy, city officials and community leaders are expected to convene in the coming days to address these critical issues and promote greater awareness surrounding safe driving practices.
This heartbreaking event not only reflects the fragility of life but also underscores the importance of community and compassion in times of crisis. As the city grieves the loss of a mother and her children, it stands united in support of one another, hoping for recovery and healing for those who remain.
