In a heart-wrenching incident early Tuesday morning, a South Carolina deputy was shot and killed during an ambush while attempting to apprehend a suspect. The incident occurred shortly after the deputy had completed his field training.
Deputy Devin Mason, aged 27, along with another deputy, arrived at a residence near Lamar around 1:30 a.m. to arrest a wanted individual, according to the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office. Upon entering the home, both deputies were met with immediate gunfire.
Tragically, Deputy Mason succumbed to his injuries. His fellow deputy, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was transported to a local hospital where he remains in stable condition.
The suspect involved in the shooting has been named as 25-year-old Cameron Ray Dennett. Authorities revealed that Dennett was already facing charges including criminal conspiracy, forgery, and offenses related to computer crimes. Furthermore, he was prohibited from possessing a firearm.
In the course of the confrontation, Dennett was fatally shot.
Alongside Dennett, law enforcement arrested a 28-year-old woman identified as Kristen Porter. She was also wanted on similar charges and was apprehended at the scene of the ambush.
Deputy Mason joined the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office in 2024 after graduating from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in March of the same year. He had just completed his field training the previous week, a milestone that underscores the disturbing nature of this tragedy.
In a statement reflecting on Mason’s contributions, Sheriff Michael August expressed, “In his time with us, he demonstrated unwavering dedication, integrity, and professionalism. Deputy Mason served the people of Darlington County with heart and honor. Though his time with us was far too short, his impact will not be forgotten.” His words resonate deeply within the community as many mourn the loss.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has taken charge of the investigation into the shooting. As of now, no further details have been disclosed regarding the events leading up to the incident or the specifics of the ongoing inquiry.
The ambush has left both the local community and law enforcement officials shaken. Many residents have expressed their condolences and support for the family of Deputy Mason. The tragic nature of his death has sparked discussions on the dangers faced by law enforcement officers daily.
