A devastating car accident in Oregon has claimed the lives of a college softball player and her coach. The incident occurred when the team bus was involved in a head-on collision while returning from a game, an event that has left the Umpqua Community College community mourning.
Kiley Jones, a 19-year-old freshman on the Umpqua Community College softball team, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. Jami Strinz, the head coach of the team, was critically injured in the crash and later succumbed to her injuries in the hospital. Both were traveling home from a game in Coos Bay when the accident occurred, as confirmed by school officials and local law enforcement over the weekend.
Dr. Rachel Pokrandt, the president of Umpqua Community College, expressed the community’s sorrow in a heartfelt statement. She conveyed, “We are deeply saddened to confirm that one of our student-athletes, Kiley Jones, and one of our coaches, Jami Strinz, lost their lives in the accident. Additional staff and students remain in hospitals in Eugene and Portland. UCC hearts are breaking with this news, and we ask the community to keep the families and all of those affected in their thoughts and prayers.”
The tragedy unfolded on Friday night at approximately 9:56 p.m. According to a report by the Oregon State Police, Strinz was at the helm of the team bus when a Chevrolet Silverado, driven by a 32-year-old man, crossed the centerline and collided head-on with the bus. This alarming detail underscores the danger of reckless driving and the potential consequences it can bring.
On the bus at the time were 10 members of the softball team. The accident resulted in serious injuries for eight of them, while Jones was confirmed dead at the scene. Strinz was airlifted to the hospital but did not survive the critical injuries she sustained from the crash.
The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado, Johnathan James Dowdy, was also seriously injured and transported to a nearby hospital. Authorities are currently conducting an investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event fully. As the community grapples with the aftermath, their focus has turned toward supporting those injured.
Umpqua Community College has expressed its grief over the loss of two cherished members of its community. Strinz was celebrated not just for her role as a coach but also for the significant impact she had made in her first season as the head of the program. Jones had shown great promise as an athlete, playing first base in 28 games for the team.
In light of these events, the college has provided support services to students, faculty, and staff affected by the tragedy. The college urges everyone to respect the families’ privacy as they navigate this painful time and emphasizes the importance of coming together to mourn.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek also shared her condolences via social media, saying, “My heart aches for the Umpqua Community College family reeling from this tragedy. Oregon is here for you in your grief and loss. You are in my prayers. Many thanks to the Oregon State Police and other emergency responders for their compassionate response.”
The fatalities of Jones and Strinz have deeply impacted the Umpqua Community College softball team. In respect for their fallen teammates, the team canceled their games scheduled for Saturday. They are set to return to play next Friday, but it remains uncertain how the team will cope in the wake of this tragedy.
This heart-wrenching event serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the devastating consequences of roadway accidents. Communities across the nation are urged to exercise caution when driving, especially in adverse conditions, to prevent similar tragedies from occurring.
