A father in North Carolina has shocked the community by confessing to the deaths of four of his children. Wellington Delano Dickens III, aged 38, made a chilling phone call to 911, revealing that he had killed his children and kept their remains in a car trunk at his home near Zebulon. He also reportedly admitted to burying a fifth child behind the house.
According to court records, Dickens faces four counts of first-degree murder. Law enforcement officials stated he confessed to the killings over a span of several months. The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded to his home shortly after 10 p.m. on October 27 after Dickens told the 911 dispatcher about the deaths of his children.
Upon arrival, deputies found Dickens at the residence, along with his 3-year-old son, who was alive and unharmed. A search of the garage uncovered what appeared to be human remains inside the trunk of a vehicle, leading investigators to believe these remains had been concealed for some time.
In a recording of the 911 call obtained by WRAL-TV, Dickens identified himself and provided the address of his home. He allegedly confessed to killing his children during the conversation with the dispatcher.
During the call, Dickens made the following disturbing statement: “It’s a lot to explain, but in a nutshell, it’s probably my fault. It’s bad. It started out as me over-disciplining – that’s it.” This admission has left law enforcement and the community grappling with the motives behind such actions.
At a news conference, Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell indicated that investigators believe the tragic deaths occurred between May and September of this year. Although the sheriff admitted not knowing the reason behind the killings, he expressed heartfelt sorrow, stating, “as a father and as a grandfather, I can stand here and say there’s no reason for a father to murder his children.”
Authorities revealed that Dickens’ wife, Stephanie Rae Jones Dickens, passed away in April 2024 due to complications following a miscarriage. Investigators suspect the unfortunate killings took place after her death.
Neighbors have painted a picture of a reclusive family, noting that the children were homeschooled. The home had been visited previously by deputies following the death of Stephanie Dickens, but her passing was ruled a natural cause after she refused medical treatment.
Captain Don Pate of the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office noted, “The neighbors said they never saw them come outside, and they were homeschooled, so they were just confined to the house.” This isolation may have contributed to the tragic circumstances that unfolded within the home.
In recent court documents, Dickens reportedly confessed to burying a fifth child in the woods behind his home. He claimed that the infant’s health deteriorated before he wrapped the baby in plastic or paper and buried the child.
Officials stated that this death was never reported, and relatives told investigators they hadn’t seen the infant since Dickens relocated. As of now, the remains of this child have not been discovered.
Fox News Digital is actively working to obtain the indictment and charging documents related to this unsettling case. Sheriff Bizzell expressed how deeply this incident has impacted every deputy, investigator, and first responder involved, stating, “It’s something you don’t ever forget.” The psychological toll of such tragedies resonates well beyond the immediate family.
At this time, officials have not released specific details regarding the manner of the children’s deaths. The state medical examiner’s office continues to analyze the remains to ascertain their causes of death. Additionally, authorities have announced that a search for the fifth child will resume as soon as weather conditions become favorable, according to the court documents.
This heartbreaking case serves as a stark reminder of the complexities of familial relationships and the extreme actions that can emerge from underlying issues. As more details unfold, the community remains in shock, grappling with the ramifications of such an unthinkable tragedy.
The investigation is ongoing, and further developments will continue to shed light on this tragic situation.
