National Guard member Sarah Beckstrom, aged 20 from West Virginia, tragically lost her life after being shot in Washington, D.C., as confirmed by President Donald Trump. The announcement came on a holiday marked by gratitude and reflection.
During his statement on Thanksgiving, Trump expressed deep sorrow over Beckstrom’s untimely death, stating, “I heard that Sarah Beckstrom … was highly respected, a young and magnificent person. She began her service in June 2023 and excelled in every aspect. It’s heartbreaking to report that she’s no longer with us. She has been savagely attacked and is gone now.”
The attack also left another National Guardsman, Andrew Wolfe, who is 24 years old, in critical condition. The president indicated that Wolfe is currently “fighting for his life,” and the nation hopes for positive news regarding his recovery.
The suspect in this shocking incident, identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national, is also reported to be in serious condition. Trump referred to him as a “monster,” emphasizing the severity of the situation.
As news of Beckstrom’s death spread, condolences poured in from officials and lawmakers. Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth shared his tribute on social media, stating, “An American hero, now home with the Lord. RIP, Specialist Sarah Beckstrom. May our nation kneel in prayer for her family.”
FBI Director Kash Patel also weighed in, saying, “Sarah Beckstrom was a young soldier and patriot with her entire life ahead of her. Please join me in praying for her family, friends, and fellow soldiers left behind.”
D.C. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro voiced the deep sense of loss felt across the community, saying, “Our hearts and prayers go out to the family of 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom of the National Guard—a hero who volunteered to serve D.C. on Thanksgiving for people she never met and gave the ultimate sacrifice. May she rest in peace. It is now time to avenge her death and secure justice.”
Attorney General Pam Bondi expressed her devastation as well, stating, “Please pray for Sarah’s family. America will never forget her courage. There will be justice for Sarah, and we must continue to pray for Andrew as he fights to recover.” Bondi also confirmed that the Justice Department would seek the death penalty against the alleged shooter.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt extended her condolences, noting, “May God bless Sarah’s family during this unimaginably difficult time.”
West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey praised Beckstrom’s bravery and dedication. “Sarah served with courage and an unwavering sense of duty to her state and nation. She answered the call to serve and carried out her mission with the strength and character that define the very best of the West Virginia National Guard,” he stated. “Today, we honor her bravery and sacrifice as we mourn the loss of a young woman who gave everything she had to defend others.”
Senator Jim Justice, R-W.Va., expressed his heartbreak, adding, “Our prayers are with her family, friends, and fellow guardsmen during this incredibly difficult Thanksgiving Day. We are also lifting up Andrew Wolfe in prayer as he continues his journey to recovery. West Virginians always show up for one another, and today it’s our turn to support our service members as they mourn this terrible loss.”
Senator Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., echoed these sentiments, stating, “West Virginia will never forget Sarah’s service, her sacrifice, and the dedication she showed to her state and her country. We will stand firmly with her family and the West Virginia National Guard community during this incredibly painful time.”
Lakanwal, aged 29, entered the United States legally in 2021 as part of the humanitarian parole program initiated by the Biden administration following the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. His vetting process included oversight by the CIA, and he reportedly passed all background checks with no issues.
Earlier this year, Lakanwal received his asylum application approval from the Trump administration. Furthermore, a report from the Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General released in June found no systemic failures in the vetting process for Afghan refugees. Although the tragedy is profound, it has led U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to announce a reexamination of green cards issued to immigrants from countries considered high-risk, including Afghanistan, and to implement enhanced national security measures during immigrant vetting.
The loss of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom is a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by service members. Her legacy will inspire many, and her bravery will always be honored.
