New insights have surfaced regarding the tragic plane crash that claimed the life of Brett James, a celebrated country music songwriter known for his work on Carrie Underwood’s hit “Jesus, Take the Wheel.”
A recent report by the National Transportation Safety Board, or NTSB, details the events preceding the fatal crash that occurred on September 18. James had taken off from John C. Tune Airport in Nashville and was en route to Macon County Airport in Franklin, North Carolina. The flight included three passengers: James, his wife Melody Carole, aged 59, and her daughter Meryl Wilson, aged 28. Sadly, no one survived the crash.
According to the report, at approximately 2:48 p.m. local time, James contacted air traffic control as he prepared to land. He reported his altitude at 6,800 feet and indicated that he intended to perform a 360-degree turn to position himself for landing.

After this communication, air traffic control received no further transmissions from James, which raised concerns about the state of the flight.
As the investigation indicated, the aircraft began a descending left turn from 6,300 feet and completed a full circle before approaching the runway at an altitude of 3,300 feet. Monitoring footage revealed that the airplane flew over the runway prior to initiating a sharp descent. The descent shifted into a tightening spiral, ultimately leading to the aircraft crashing into the ground. The report detailed that the airplane exhibited signs of “rocking from side to side” and began “rolling inverted and descending behind a tree line.”
The NTSB investigation found no indications of engine failure. Subsequently, the aircraft has been recovered and is now undergoing a comprehensive examination to determine the exact cause of the crash.
An NTSB representative was not immediately available for comment regarding the investigation’s findings.
Months before his tragic death, James shared precious moments with his family. On June 16, he posted a heartfelt photo celebrating Father’s Day, expressing his joy with the caption, “Such an amazing Father’s Day!!”
In a lead-up to his final moments, James also shared a selfie taken with Melody during their vacation in the Bahamas, enjoying life together and creating memories.
The plane crash occurred just days after James’ stepdaughter Meryl celebrated her 28th birthday, adding a layer of heartbreak to the family’s tragedy.
Brett James leaves behind an extensive legacy within the country music genre, having written and contributed to over 500 songs. His work has been recorded by numerous top artists, including Faith Hill, Kelly Clarkson, Luke Bryan, Keith Urban, and Meghan Trainor.
