A California State freshman lost his life in a tragic drowning incident while vacationing with fraternity members in Arizona this past weekend. This unfortunate incident was confirmed by the Sigma Pi Fraternity at Cal State Fullerton.
Simon Daniel, aged 18, was enjoying a trip to Lake Havasu River when he decided to take a swim with his fraternity brothers and sorority sisters on Saturday.
As Simon and his friends entered the water, they were unaware of recent heavy rainfalls in the Havasu Valley. This weather has dramatically increased water levels, leading to hazardous conditions characterized by strong currents, crosswinds, and swells, as reported in a statement from the fraternity.
In a desperate effort to save the six students, several fraternity members plunged into the tumultuous waters. Tragically, Simon was swept away by a sudden wave that separated him from one of the rescuers. The fraternity stated that he suddenly disappeared beneath the water.
Following the incident, the students promptly called 911. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, along with additional agencies, quickly mobilized to conduct a search operation. Divers, remotely operated vehicles, and sonar equipment were deployed to assist in locating Simon Daniel.
The sheriff’s deputies later confirmed that Daniel went under the water on Saturday and did not resurface.
After an extensive search, authorities recovered Simon’s body on Sunday morning. The tragic outcome has left many in shock, as around Lake Havasu, the dangers can often be overlooked by swimmers.
Simon was pursuing a degree in computer science and is mourned by his mother and other family members. Details regarding his family’s statements have not been publicly shared yet.
According to the fraternity, Simon was a beloved member, known for his passion for music, energetic nature, and kind spirit. The Cal State Fullerton chapter of Sigma Pi issued a statement expressing that he embodied the heart of the fraternity, being genuine and joyful. His vibrant smile was said to light up every room he entered.
This tragic event serves as a solemn reminder of the potential dangers associated with swimming in unfamiliar waters. Many vacation spots may house hidden risks, especially during or after periods of heavy rainfall.
Authorities urge everyone to remain vigilant and informed about water conditions to prevent further incidents. Adapting safety measures, such as swimming only in designated areas and being aware of changing weather patterns, can significantly reduce the risks while enjoying aquatic activities.
In light of this incident, various campus organizations and fraternity chapters may evaluate their safety protocols during outings to ensure the well-being of their members.
The local community and campus organizations have expressed grief and support for Simon’s family. Vigil services and remembrance events are likely to be organized as a tribute to his life.
While it is an incredibly trying time, the emphasis on community resilience and support for one another remains strong.
As we reflect on this heartbreaking event, our thoughts are with Simon Daniel’s family and friends during this difficult time. The loss of a young individual so full of life is a tragedy that echoes beyond the realms of his immediate circle and into the wider community.
