A hot-air balloon carrying 21 passengers caught fire and crashed in Brazil on Saturday morning, resulting in the deaths of at least eight individuals, according to the military fire brigade of Santa Catarina.
The incident occurred in the state of Santa Catarina, located in the southern region of Brazil. The fire ignited in the basket of the balloon, prompting the pilot to attempt an emergency landing, officials reported.
Social media footage captures black smoke rising from the deflated balloon as it descends into a wooded area near Praia Grande, a locality known for its hot-air balloon activities.
Of the 21 passengers, 13 survived the ordeal, including the pilot, and were quickly transported to local hospitals with unspecified injuries.
The survivors managed to escape the fire by jumping out of the balloon as the blaze erupted, according to emergency responders.
The balloon initially gained height after several passengers had jumped, which ultimately contributed to the tragic outcome. Lt. Col. Zevir Cipriano Jr. stated that four passengers perished while trapped in the balloon and four others jumped when it began to fall.
In response to the tragedy, Santa Catarina Governor Jorginho Mello expressed his condolences in a video statement on X platform, saying, “We are in mourning. A tragedy has happened. We are committed to investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident to understand how and why it occurred. The priority now is for our state services to provide assistance to the victims and their families.”
Governor Mello emphasized the urgency for authorities to support those affected by this devastating event.
Three of the deceased were found in a tragic embrace, according to a statement from Chief Ulisses Gabriel of Santa Catarina’s civil police. He described the scene as heartbreaking.
The balloon ride, priced at $100 per person, was intended to last 45 minutes and ascend to a height of 3,280 feet. The exact altitude of the balloon at the time of the incident remains unclear.
In a statement, the hot-air balloon company Sobrevoar expressed deep sorrow over the loss inflicted by the tragedy, stating, “Despite rigorous safety measures and adherence to all recommended protocols by our experienced pilot, we are grappling with the profound pain this incident has caused.”
Sobreroar also stated that they have maintained a clean operational record and are now suspending their services indefinitely in light of the incident.
According to government sources, the area typically witnesses 25 to 30 hot-air balloon departures each day, underscoring the popularity of this activity.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva extended his sympathies to the grieving families, assuring them that the federal government stands ready to assist in the investigatory efforts surrounding the tragic accident.
In context, just the previous Sunday, another hot-air balloon mishap occurred in São Paulo, claiming the life of one woman while injuring 11 other passengers.
