A devastating shooting at a pool party in Texas has resulted in the death of a promising college basketball player. Jamarion Brown, a 23-year-old student-athlete from Henderson State University, was fatally shot in the head during the tragic event.
According to the Camp County Sheriff’s Office, the unfortunate incident occurred last week, leaving two others injured. This devastating news has sent shockwaves through the Henderson State community and beyond.
The university released a heartfelt statement mourning the loss of Jamarion Brown. “It is with deep sadness that Henderson State Athletics mourns the death of junior men’s basketball player Jamarion Brown,” the statement noted. “‘Jo’ spent just one season in Arkadelphia, but his impact on our campus was profound.”
Head coach Jimmy Elgas expressed his sorrow for the loss, stating, “No words can express our sadness for Jamarion’s family, friends, and teammates. His impact was felt not only on the basketball court but throughout the fabric of Henderson State University. We all grieve together. His loss leaves a tremendous void on our campus, but Jo will be remembered and honored in our hearts forever.”
Authorities responded swiftly to multiple reports of a shooting at the pool party in Camp County. Upon their arrival, they discovered Jamarion Brown critically injured, while two other individuals sustained non-life-threatening gunshot injuries.
Emergency services activated a helicopter for immediate transport. Unfortunately, due to the severity of Brown’s injuries, he could not be airlifted right away. Brown was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital before being transported to another facility in Tyler, where he was pronounced dead.
In connection with the tragic shooting, the Camp County Sheriff’s Office arrested 17-year-old Onterrian Jamour Newton earlier this week. He now faces a murder charge, along with additional pending charges. Law enforcement officials are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding this horrific event.
Jamarion Brown was remembered as a “shining light” by those who knew him. An obituary highlighted his warm spirit, deep commitment to family, and passion for basketball. “Basketball was one of Jamarion’s greatest passions, a game he played with heart, discipline, and joy,” the obituary noted.
His family played a significant role in his life, providing the strength he relied on both on and off the court. “Though his time with us was far too short, Jamarion’s life was filled with purpose and love. He leaves behind countless cherished memories and a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him,” the obituary concluded.
In his first year with the Reddies, Brown averaged 6.5 points and 3.6 rebounds during the past season. He previously played for two years at Southwestern Christian College before transferring to Henderson. His dedication to the game and his teammates highlighted his character.
This tragic event underscores the broader issues surrounding gun violence in communities across America. The loss of a young life with so much potential raises important conversations about safety and the need for change. As communities mourn, the call for action becomes increasingly urgent.
The Henderson State community, along with friends and family of Jamarion Brown, continues to process this heartbreaking news. They remember a young man who brought joy and energy to those around him and whose legacy will live on in the memories of those who loved him.
The impact of this loss reaches far beyond the basketball court. It reminds us all of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing each moment with loved ones. In the days to come, the community will honor Jamarion not just by remembering his achievements but by fostering a spirit of kindness and unity in his memory.
