Three American Soldiers Declared Deceased Following Vehicle Recovery Efforts

Three American soldiers were confirmed deceased on Monday after the recovery of an M88 Hercules armored recovery vehicle they were operating. This vehicle sank in a swamp while on a mission last week in Lithuania.

Search and recovery missions continue for a fourth soldier near Pabradė, Lithuania, as stated by U.S. Army Europe and Africa.

According to a statement from U.S. Army Europe and Africa, the soldiers were part of the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division. They went missing early in the morning on March 25 while conducting operations to repair and tow another vehicle. Their identities are being withheld until their families have been notified.

The M88A2 armored vehicle was retrieved from the bog early Monday, March 31, after extensive recovery efforts that spanned six days. This operation involved significant resources from Lithuania and drew assistance from hundreds of service members from the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, Lithuanian Armed Forces, Polish Armed Forces, and various civilian agencies.

Details of the Recovery Operation

The U.S. Army’s statement emphasized the challenges faced during the operation, noting that the 63-ton vehicle was located in an area with unstable ground conditions. The successful retrieval was accomplished through the combined efforts of military and civilian teams who faced numerous engineering challenges.

Maj. Gen. Christopher Norrie, the commanding general of the 3rd Infantry Division, expressed profound grief regarding the loss of the soldiers. Words cannot express our gratitude to those still working around the clock during these extensive search and recovery efforts and your unwavering commitment not to rest until all are found.”

The Lithuanian Armed Forces played a crucial role by providing military helicopters, aircraft, unmanned aerial systems, and rescue personnel to support the recovery. Over the course of the operation, they also brought in excavators and heavy construction equipment to aid in the retrieval process.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda expressed his condolences in a statement, saying, “It is with deep sadness and sorrow that I received the news of the tragic loss of three U.S. soldiers during a U.S.-led training exercise in Lithuania.” He also conveyed his sympathy to the soldiers’ families and extended solidarity with the American nation.
