Kansas City is grappling with the tragic loss of an officer after a fatal encounter with a fleeing suspect. Officer Hunter Simoncic, a recent addition to the Kansas City Police Department, was killed while trying to safely deploy stop sticks to end a police pursuit.
Identified as just 26 years old, Simoncic had recently graduated from the department’s academy in 2023, showcasing a bright future ahead of him. This devastating incident unfolded early Tuesday morning on State Avenue, where he was struck by a fleeing driver.
The Fatal Encounter
According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, the pursuit began around 12:30 a.m. when officers responded to reports of shots fired on Everett Avenue. By 12:40 a.m., officers arrived on the scene and discovered an unconscious man, later identified as Dennis Mitchell III, in the driver’s seat of a truck. Upon awakening, he fled the area, igniting a high-stakes chase.
Mitchell, aged 31, did not stop there. He switched vehicles during the pursuit, abandoning the first truck for another. As officers pursued him, Simoncic and a fellow officer positioned themselves to lay down stop sticks in an effort to halt the reckless driver. Tragically, Mitchell allegedly accelerated toward Simoncic, hitting him with the second truck before fleeing the scene.
Emergency Response and Charges
Simoncic suffered critical injuries and was transported to the University of Kansas Medical Center, where he was sadly pronounced dead. Meanwhile, Mitchell crashed his vehicle around 12:55 a.m., only to be taken into custody shortly thereafter. He was treated at the same hospital as Simoncic before being booked into Wyandotte County Jail.
District Attorney Mark Dupree announced several charges against Mitchell, including capital murder, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon, and two counts of theft. Notably, both trucks involved in the incident were reported stolen, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the events of that night.

The Kansas City Police Department posted on social media to express their grief, highlighting the “profound sense of loss and pain” felt throughout the community following Simoncic’s death. Before joining the force, Simoncic had served as a shift supervisor at the Southeast Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Center, earning a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s in forensic science.
Additionally, he was actively involved in his community, volunteering at local schools, including Benjamin Banneker Elementary, where he read to children weekly as part of a program called Lead to Read KC. His commitment to community service reflected his heartfelt desire to drive positive change.
