A renowned Hawaiian chef has been identified among the six victims of a fatal plane crash that occurred over the weekend during takeoff from Bangor International Airport in Maine. This tragic incident has sparked widespread grief and concern.
The Federal Aviation Administration reported that a Bombardier Challenger 600 jet, originally bound for Paris, France, experienced a catastrophic failure during its departure at 7:45 p.m. on Sunday. The crash took place amidst severe weather conditions brought on by Winter Storm Fern, as the aircraft flipped and caught fire.
Following the incident, a heartfelt message from the community addressed the loss of Nick Mastrascusa, a beloved parent, coach, and friend. A GoFundMe page dedicated to him stated, “We are heartbroken to share the tragic news. On Sunday evening, January 25, Nick lost his life in a plane crash in Bangor, Maine.” The page further emphasized the gravity of this loss for his family, as he leaves behind his partner Natalia and three young children enrolled in various grades.
The jet was registered to a partner at Arnold and Itkin Trial Lawyers, a personal injury law firm located in Houston. Sources confirmed to ABC13 that Tara Arnold, a prominent attorney at the firm and wife to founding partner Kurt Arnold, was among those tragically lost in the flight.
The pilot of the aircraft, 47-year-old Jacob Hosmer, also succumbed to the crash, according to reports from his father, Gary. Additionally, a third victim has been identified as Shawna Collins, deepening the wave of sorrow among the families affected.
Mastrascusa held the position of executive vice president of hospitality at Beyond, a luxury travel company established by the Arnolds. His professional accomplishments were noteworthy; he was recognized as an award-winning chef and sommelier, renowned for his culinary expertise accumulated over more than two decades. His experience spanned some of the most prestigious luxury hotels, private clubs, and resorts worldwide.
The company’s website highlighted his most recent role as Executive Chef and Director of Food and Beverage at Discovery Land’s Kūkiʻo Golf and Beach Club located on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. Here, he managed three restaurants and cultivated an exclusive wine program, embodying a culinary vision characterized by sophistication and a deep respect for local culture.
Mastrascusa’s educational background contributed significantly to his impressive career. He studied at Johnson & Wales University in Miami and later attended the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley, where he honed his skills under the stringent standards of luxury hospitality.
