A police officer and a gunman died in a shooting incident at a Pennsylvania hospital on Saturday morning. The shooting took place at UPMC Memorial Hospital located in York County, according to local officials.
The incident began around 10:45 a.m. when emergency responders received a 911 call about an active threat in the hospital. Ted Czech, a public information officer at York County’s Office of Emergency Management, confirmed details to Fox News Digital.
The identity of the gunman has yet to be disclosed. However, the officer who lost his life has been identified as Andrew Duarte. This information was shared in a heartfelt post by the West York Borough Police Department on their Facebook page.
In the post, the department expressed their condolences saying, “Our prayers and deepest condolences go out to West York Borough Police Officer, Andrew Duarte’s family, and all of our brothers and sisters in the West York Borough Police Department that have lost a comrade and friend. Our community grieves the loss of a hero.”
Fortunately, no patients were injured during the shooting. Hospital spokesperson Susan Manko released an official statement reassuring the public. “We have received confirmed reports of a gunman at UPMC Memorial and shots fired,” Manko stated.
Further updates revealed that the gunman had been apprehended, and the hospital was secured. Manko continued, “This is a fluid situation; law enforcement is on premises and is managing the situation. We are grateful to all the local law enforcement agencies for their quick response.”
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro acknowledged the incident on social media and confirmed that he was heading to the hospital. In a post on X, Shapiro stated, “I’ve been briefed on the tragic shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York County, and I am on my way to the scene.”
He added, “The hospital is now secure, and members of the Pennsylvania State Police and PEMA are on the ground responding alongside our local and federal partners.”
