California Beach Incident Raises Alarm After Recent Drownings

A man is now presumed dead after a powerful wave swept him along with two women into the ocean at Garrapata State Park on Saturday. This tragic event comes just one week after a father and his seven-year-old daughter drowned under similar circumstances at the same beach.

Details of the Incident

According to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, the trio had been standing on the rocks at Soberanes Point around 3 p.m. when a large wave unexpectedly pulled them into the surf. Bystanders reported hearing desperate screams for help as the water surged.

Fortunately, the two women managed to swim back to safety despite the treacherous conditions. They were taken to a hospital for evaluation, but their current conditions have not been disclosed.

Search and Recovery Efforts

A Coast Guard helicopter was able to spot what seemed to be a body around 4:30 p.m., but treacherous surf made it impossible to maintain visual contact. For safety reasons, officials were unable to recover the body at that time.

The missing man, believed to be in his thirties, was last seen wearing a white turban, a black shirt, black shorts, and a black vest-style jacket.

As darkness fell, search efforts were temporarily suspended due to hazardous conditions. Dive teams and drone operators resumed their search early Sunday morning. However, high winds and dangerous water conditions once again hampered their efforts. The recovery mission was halted at nightfall but is expected to restart on Monday morning.

Public Warnings and Safety Advisories

In light of these incidents, officials have urged the public to avoid the Soberanes Point area. They have issued warnings against climbing on coastal rocks and entering the ocean under any circumstances.

The sheriff’s office stated, “Conditions remain extremely dangerous, and a Beach Hazards Statement is still in effect.” This warning underscores the need for caution among beachgoers, particularly during times of rough surf.

Only last week, 15-to-20-foot waves swept away a 39-year-old father and his young daughter, who were visiting from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Tragically, both lost their lives in the ocean. Their bodies have since been recovered, highlighting the perilous conditions that can arise at coastal locations.
