The Beach Catholic movement, inspired by a desire to spread faith, sets up Mass near the sea each Sunday, inviting all to celebrate spirituality in an idyllic atmosphere.
Since its inception in 2014, this initiative has garnered increasing attention and attendance. Each week, more than 1,000 individuals gather to participate in the unique service. In total, Beach Catholic’s dedicated following has reportedly exceeded 50,000 attendees over the past decade, according to Jordan Bernhardi, the group’s director of operations.
“It is a powerful public witness of faith that draws Catholics from all over Long Island, with some even coming from New York City. There is something so profound about hundreds of Catholics kneeling before their King and receiving Him in the Eucharist, at the beach,” Bernhardi conveyed.
Beach Catholic operates across three beaches in Long Island, partnering with three parishes: St. Ignatius Martyr, St. Mary of The Isle, and Our Lady of The Miraculous Medal. Fr. Brian Barr, pastor of Beach Catholic, emphasizes that faith should not be confined to church walls. With services held in the open air, religion transforms into an experience accessible to everyone.
“When you were a kid, do you remember feeling uneasy or embarrassed about expressing your faith in front of others? I do. I think many people do. We should not be that way,” Barr emphasized. He asserts that taking the Eucharist—the most significant prayer for Catholics—outside the confines of a traditional space challenges fears associated with public displays of faith.
At a recent beach Mass, attendees shared their thoughts and experiences regarding the service. Tim Murphy, who has attended since the movement began, expressed the importance of the Mass in his life. “Every week we still make the trip down, and it’s worth it. My wife and I met here because of the beach Mass. Without it, my son would not be here today,” Murphy explained, recalling the significant relationship fostered by the spiritual community.
Murphy described his attendance as life-altering, stating, “Having this many people gather and celebrate outdoors on the beach is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” He encouraged others to join, emphasizing the beauty of community and shared faith.
“As people pass by on the boardwalk, they stop to hear the Word of God. It’s an incredible experience, and I invite everyone to join us sometime this year,” he said. This open invitation fosters a welcoming spirit among both congregation members and passersby.
Dee Santos, another regular attendee, observed that each week presents special moments. During one recent Mass, attendance reached about 1,200 people. “What I love most is that we have this beautiful gift from God—the beach—and we get to celebrate His gifts to us in His presence,” Santos shared.
She noted that the beach Mass attracts individuals who might not typically attend church. For many, it serves as an entry point into the faith. “Last week, we encountered a man who stopped to see what was happening. We invited him to join us for Mass,” Santos recounted. This illustrates how the movement actively engages with the community, drawing in those who may not have otherwise felt connected to a church.
Santos added, “It’s so rewarding to bring in other voices from the church, to hear about happenings across the Barrier Island, and to truly celebrate being Catholic together.” Each gathering on the beach becomes not only a service but a demonstration of communal strength and shared belief.
