The first openly transgender Oscar nominee for Best Actress, Karla Sofía Gascón, has voiced her concerns following criticism for her past controversial social media posts.
The Academy Award contender, known for her role in “Emilia Pérez,” faced scrutiny over a series of old tweets that resurfaced recently. These comments included disparaging remarks about various religions and a post regarding George Floyd shortly after his death, where she referred to him as a “drug addict swindler.” In this tweet, Gascón addressed both sides of the debate surrounding Floyd’s death, including offensive stereotypes and critiques of law enforcement.
In response to the intense public backlash, Gascón arranged an interview with CNN en Español, aiming to clarify her statements without any involvement from her film’s production team, which is distributed by Netflix.
During the emotional interview, she expressed, “my most sincere apologies to all the people who may have felt offended by the ways I express myself in my past, in my present, and in my future.” However, she affirmed her intention to retain her Oscar nomination.
Gascón declared, “I cannot renounce a nomination because what I have done is a job and what is being valued is my acting work.” She emphasized that she has not committed any crime or harmed anyone, stating, “I am not a racist, nor am I anything that all these people have taken it upon themselves to try to make others believe that I am.”
Reflecting on the situation, she remarked, “I believe that I have been judged, condemned, sacrificed, crucified, and stoned without a trial and without the option to defend myself.”
Gascón attempted to provide context to her comments about Floyd, asserting that her intention was to highlight the hypocrisy around his status as a symbol of oppression.
She articulated, “He was a person who had been in a very difficult situation in his life, and suddenly he becomes a symbol of a cause that everyone loved.” She firmly denied any implications of racism, asserting her respect for people of all skin colors.
Gascón’s management was contacted for a response, but no immediate reply was received.
