As travelers seek rejuvenation during vacations, many are now embracing alcohol-free experiences. This shift in preferences is prompting hotels to adapt their offerings to cater to a growing number of guests who prioritize healthier lifestyle choices.
At the Pasea Hotel & Spa in Huntington Beach, California, staff have reported a remarkable 25% year-over-year rise in sales of non-alcoholic beverages. According to Paul Maddison, the hotel’s Regional General Manager, this trend reflects significant changes in guest expectations driven by a broader movement toward health-conscious travel.
Maddison emphasized, “As we see a growing focus on healthier lifestyle choices from travelers, the surgeon general’s recent warning highlights the evolving expectations within the hospitality industry. We believe the industry as a whole will continue to innovate in ways that prioritize both health and high-quality experiences.”
Earlier this month, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy issued a new advisory linking alcohol consumption to seven types of cancer. “Alcohol is a well-established, preventable cause of cancer responsible for approximately 100,000 cases and 20,000 cancer deaths annually in the United States,” Dr. Murthy stated. Alarmingly, he noted that many Americans remain unaware of these risks.
The shift towards alcohol-free alternatives is evident at the Bardessono Hotel & Spa in Napa Valley, California. Alain Negueloua, vice president and general manager, reported a positive response to their alcohol-free concierge service. “This shift reflects a larger industry trend where hotels are leaning into inclusive experiences that cater to every guest’s individual needs.” Negueloua believes that prioritizing such options not only enhances guest experiences but also encourages mindful travel.
According to the 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), over 220 million Americans aged 12 and older have consumed alcohol at some point in their lives. Furthermore, 16.4% of respondents reported heavy drinking. For adults 18 and older, about 23%, or 60.4 million, indicated they were binge drinking.
The trend of sober travel, also dubbed “dry tripping,” has emerged as a significant movement in 2024, with more than 40% of travelers expressing interest in planning detox trips in the coming year, according to Hotels.com. This rising demand underscores a growing societal focus on wellness and moderation during vacations.
Data from NSDUH indicates that mentions of “mocktails” in reviews surged by 50% year-over-year, as guests increasingly praise the creative nonalcoholic options at numerous hotels around the world. Bobbie Peppers, general manager of The Memphian in Memphis, Tennessee, has also noted a heightened interest in mindful drinking options.
Peppers stated, “The surgeon general’s recent guidance emphasizes the importance of offering creative non-alcoholic alternatives. To meet this interest, we’ve introduced a thoughtfully curated mocktail menu and events such as a non-alcoholic, three-course meal experience. This allows us to adapt to changing guest preferences while promoting balance and wellness.”
