Jacksonville Jaguars rookie Travis Hunter recently experienced an unforgettable reunion with a woman he had met on an airplane shortly after being selected as the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft.
This touching encounter with Sandy Hawkins Combs took place in May. Just days later, on a Monday night before a matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, both Hunter and Combs shared an emotional moment on the field with an embrace and a photo op before kickoff.
The unexpected connection between Hunter and Combs gained attention through a social media post that highlighted their chance meeting.
Combs reflected on her flight home from Denver, recalling the kindness shown to her by a polite young man seated next to her. She wrote, “I had the most wonderful flight home from Denver. I met the nicest young man who sat next to me. He offered to put my bag in the overhead compartment and helped me with my tray. He was always polite, saying ‘yes ma’am’ or ‘no ma’am.’ Anyone would be proud to have him as a son or grandson – so polite,” in a post on Facebook.
At that time, Combs was unaware of Hunter’s identity. However, the admiration from other passengers soon revealed his significance.
As people passed by, many congratulated Hunter, praising his accomplishments and even snapping photos with him. This sudden attention left Combs curious. She turned to Hunter and asked, “Who am I sitting next to?”
Noticing his Jaguars pants, she smiled and inquired, “Are you an athlete?” Hunter responded graciously, saying, “I’m Travis. Yes, I was drafted by the Jags.” Combs expressed her excitement, adding, “I already told my sons I want his jersey.”
Combs continued to rave about Hunter’s humble demeanor, stating, “He’s so humble and down-to-earth – I would have never guessed he was a professional athlete.” She went on to commend the Jaguars organization, saying, “JACKSONVILLE JAGS, you did good! I will be buying tickets. United Airlines, thank you for my seat assignment!”
Reflecting on the encounter days later, Hunter described it as a simple yet meaningful interaction. “It was just a regular interaction. It was me being me,” he stated. He emphasized the importance of treating others with kindness, particularly the elderly, saying, “A nice lady sat next to me, we conversed, and I made sure to take care of her like I do with my grandparents or any elderly person. So yeah, that’s all it was.”
Now, both Hunter and Combs carry with them two cherished moments: the unexpected connection on the flight and their heartfelt reunion on the field.
This story illustrates not only the warmth of human connection but also the impact of seemingly small acts of kindness. In a world often dominated by fast-paced interactions and digital communication, it is refreshing to see how a simple gesture can resonate and create lasting memories.
