Treasure Hunters Uncover Ancient Riches While Searching for Rockets in Poland’s Countryside
A group of metal detector enthusiasts recently embarked on an adventurous summer quest across the picturesque European countryside, discovering a trove of ancient treasures beneath the soil.
Operating from the central Polish city of Kalisz, the metal detecting collective known as Denar Kalisz has unearthed pots brimming with coins and significant amounts of gold, all valued at an astonishing worth.
Przemysław Kurowiak, the president of Denar Kalisz, shared with Fox News Digital that the group has dedicated over twenty years to searching for lost treasures. Their recent finds have marked a remarkable turning point in their endeavors.
The group initially set out to locate World War II-era German V-2 rockets but accidentally stumbled upon their first significant treasure instead.
"Our association is a circle of friends who enjoy uncovering history," Kurowiak explained. "We pursue this as a hobby, driven by curiosity and passion."
The first notable discovery came on June 7 when group member Hubert Piasecki uncovered a clay pot filled to the brim with ancient valuables.
"The pot contained 631 artifacts, including coins, silver ingots, and ornaments from the early Middle Ages," Kurowiak recounted. "It was a historical treasure trove waiting to be revealed."
Weeks later, on June 28, another member, Michał Makuch, made a significant find – a pot filled with coins that also date back to the early Middle Ages. Although the pot remains unopened at this stage, initial CT scans suggest it holds a substantial collection of silver coins.
"Our luck continued to grow when we discovered an extraordinary cache, featuring a gold necklace weighing 222 grams, which dates back to the Roman influence era, potentially as far back as 1,800 years ago," Kurowiak added. This remarkable find sparked excitement among archaeologists and treasure enthusiasts alike.
"This discovery is an archaeological sensation in Poland," Kurowiak stated, highlighting that Mateusz Lachowicz was the fortunate finder’s name.
Kurowiak characterized the series of discoveries as "pleasant surprises" that exceeded the group’s expectations.
"By pure accident, we have transitioned from seeking rockets to hunting for treasures," he reflected on their ironic turn of events.
The organization’s leader emphasized the importance of collaborating with professional archaeologists during their digs. Each artifact is meticulously documented and handed over to Poland’s Conservator of Monuments, ensuring the treasures find a proper home in the Museum of the Kalisz Region.
Kurowiak noted that their group has garnered an international following, with avid supporters from as far away as the United States.
"We take immense pride in this recognition, which boosts our confidence that our passion for uncovering history serves a meaningful purpose," remarked Kurowiak.
