EXCLUSIVE: The Dick’s Perfect Game All-American Classic promises not only star talent on the field but also behind the scenes in the dugouts this year.
Baseball Hall of Famer Trevor Hoffman and former San Diego Padres All-Star Ryan Klesko will serve as managers for the highly anticipated game, as confirmed to Fox News Digital.
The All-American Classic features the top 60 high school baseball players from across North America, offering them a national platform to showcase their skills. This year’s event will take place at Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres, on August 17.
The All-American Classic first debuted in 2003 and has since showcased some of the most talented names in Major League Baseball. Notable players like Bryce Harper, Gunnar Henderson, Bobby Witt Jr., Gerrit Cole, and Francisco Lindor have all participated in this prestigious event over the years.
Out of the 1,126 athletes who have taken part in the game over the last 22 years, an impressive 850 have been drafted, with 293 players selected in the first round.
Hoffman, known for holding the record for the second most saves in MLB history at 601, has been associated with the event for over a decade, previously serving as the game’s honorary chairman. He expressed enthusiasm about interacting with the exceptional high school players.
“I believe that’s my biggest opportunity. Walking around with a PG t-shirt allows kids to guess who you are. However, donning a uniform in the dugout and truly engaging with them changes the dynamics. Whether during batting practice or throughout the game, it brings a unique feel,” Hoffman shared with Fox News Digital.
He continued, “Being out among the kids, sharing my insights, and encouraging them during such an important time in their lives is incredibly rewarding. I’m genuinely looking forward to this experience and being present for these young athletes.”
Klesko reflected on the significance of events like the All-American Classic during his upbringing, noting their vital role in shaping his career.
“Without the guidance and events like this to showcase our skills, I might not have made it to the big leagues. Growing up in California, I was fortunate, but opportunities like this—along with coaching support—were essential,” Klesko stated.
The 16-year MLB veteran conveyed his excitement about being part of the journey for this year’s young athletes. He recognized the overwhelming nature of such events for these players.
“Many of these guys face a barrage of advice from various directions. Instead of telling them what to do, our role is to share our experiences, helping them navigate their paths. It’s about their futures, and we are thrilled to contribute to their growth,” Klesko added.
Both Hoffman and Klesko will lead coaching staffs that include distinguished former MLB stars. Among those joining the coaching ranks are Padres All-Stars Phil Nevin and Mark Loretta, World Series-winning manager Charlie Manuel, 20-game winner Scott Erickson, 1995 AL MVP Mo Vaughn, seven-time All-Star Alfonso Soriano, and many others.
Hoffman emphasized the eagerness among the coaches to guide the next generation of baseball stars.
“Coaches are genuinely excited to be around these young athletes. Their collective desire to impart knowledge and share experiences enriches this event significantly,” Hoffman said.
Daron Sutton, a seasoned on-air personality in MLB, has announced the All-American Classic since 2009 and will continue this year. He remarked on the consistent evolution and elite talent that characterizes the event.
“The talent has always been present from the beginning. Even during my second game, a 16-year-old Bryce Harper played. Since then, players like Francisco Lindor and Javier Baez have graced the field. Talent has never been lacking here,” Sutton noted.
He expressed that the thrilling aspect of the game lies in the individual moments that can unfold. Sutton explained that unlike traditional games with strategic elements, the focus here is on the athlete’s personal achievements.
“Great Home Run Derbies or All-Star games center around unforgettable moments, and this event is no different. We see numerous standout performances that leave lasting impressions,” he added.
Brad Clement, Perfect Game’s executive vice president and general manager, highlighted the philanthropic aspect of the event, which aims to create impactful experiences for the athletes.
“The event itself requires various components and exciting activities. However, the most significant impact stems from our visits to children battling pediatric cancer at Rady’s Children’s Hospital. This visit remains central to our mission,” Clement shared.
He noted that the event has raised over a million dollars, with more than 1.5 million in total donations benefiting various cities since its inception, reaffirming their commitment to community outreach.
Hoffman agreed, stating that visiting Rady’s Children’s Hospital provides a profound sense of perspective for young players. He emphasized the importance of using their platform to give back to their communities.
Perfect Game ensures that not only players but their families are supported through a parent symposium aimed at guiding families about the upcoming year.
Clement explained that the symposium assists families in navigating the complexities surrounding transitions to college or professional baseball endeavors.
“Clarifying what to expect in the next year is crucial, whether they plan to go to college or enter the draft. We aim to provide families with the necessary resources and insight,” Clement stated.
Klesko emphasized his commitment to being a resource not just for the players but also for their families throughout this significant journey.
“Navigating this new world can be challenging for families. Trevor and I hope to provide guidance through nutrition, training, and the entire process of becoming a professional athlete,” Klesko remarked.
Hoffman reflected on the impressive growth of the event over the years, noting how the athletes’ talents and the competition’s intensity continue to rise.
“The level of talent we see is outstanding. Providing a platform for these young athletes to showcase their abilities has been incredibly rewarding,” Hoffman concluded.
