Tributes Flow from Sports Community as Colts Owner Jim Irsay Passes Away at 65

The sports community is mourning the loss of Jim Irsay, the prominent owner of the Indianapolis Colts, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 65. The news of Irsay’s death resonated deeply among former players and colleagues, reflecting his significant impact on the franchise and the broader sports world.

Peyton Manning Remembers a Mentor

Among the first to express their sorrow was Pro Football Hall of Famer Peyton Manning. Manning, who spent his first 13 seasons with the Colts and led the team to a Super Bowl victory in 2007, shared heartfelt sentiments on social media.

In an emotional Instagram post, Manning conveyed his gratitude for Irsay’s influence on his career. He stated, “I am heartbroken to hear about Jim Irsay’s passing. He was an incredibly generous and passionate owner, and I will always be indebted to him for giving me my start in the NFL. His love for the Colts and the city of Indy was unmatched. His impact on the players who played for him will not be forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and everyone in the Colts community. He will be missed. Jim, rest in peace my friend.”

Colts Alumni Share Condolences

Manning’s sentiments echoed those of many former teammates who shared their condolences online. Notably, Pat McAfee, the former Colts punter and current ESPN personality, took to social media to recount his experiences with Irsay.

McAfee remembered their first meaningful interaction during training camp in 2011, recalling how Irsay made an effort to connect with him after the NFL lockout. In a post, McAfee mentioned, “Jim followed me on Twitter throughout the CBA negotiations, and his enthusiasm for engaging with fans was evident. He genuinely loved connecting with the Colts community.”

McAfee also credited Irsay for aiding in his transition to post-NFL life. He recalled a two-and-a-half-hour conversation in Irsay’s office that helped shape his future endeavors.

“Jim has done everything he can to help me succeed. He would join our show anytime I asked, no matter where he was in the world. His motivational messages during tough times meant a lot to me,” McAfee added.

Touching Tributes from Other Players

Adam Vinatieri, the legendary kicker who spent many successful years with the Colts, shared his grief over Irsay’s passing. In a heartfelt message, Vinatieri remarked, “I’m heartbroken to hear about the passing of Jim Irsay. He was more than just an owner; he was a man of the people, and his generosity was unmatched. I’ll always be grateful for the opportunity to have played under his leadership. Rest in peace, Jim.”

T.Y. Hilton, a star wide receiver who played for the Colts from 2012 to 2021, also expressed his sorrow. He acknowledged a personal connection with Irsay, writing on social media, “Please don’t ask me if I’m okay, because I’m not. Thank you so much, Mr. Irsay. I will forever hold our talks close to my heart. Love you! RIP Mr. Irsay.”

A Legacy Beyond Football

Jim Irsay’s journey with the Colts began in 1972 when his father purchased the franchise for $12 million. After moving the team to Indianapolis in 1984, Jim Irsay eventually took over as the owner at the young age of 37, following his father’s death in 1997. Under his leadership, the Colts thrived, achieving remarkable success, including winning the 2007 Super Bowl.

Throughout his tenure, Irsay battled various health challenges, including issues related to drug and alcohol addiction. He openly acknowledged that he had sought rehabilitation at least 15 times. Just this past January, the Colts revealed that he was being treated for a severe respiratory illness, further underlining his health struggles in recent years.

Despite these challenges, Irsay continually focused on his duties as an owner. His commitment to the Colts resulted in 258 victories during his management, which ranks fourth most in the NFL during that period. He also accomplished 10 division titles and made playoff appearances 18 times.

The Community Rallies Around the Irsay Family

In this somber moment, many current and former athletes, including Robert Griffin III and Marvin Harrison Jr., son of the legendary Colts wide receiver, also took to social media to express their condolences and pay their respects.

Jim Irsay is survived by three daughters and ten grandchildren. He was divorced from his wife in 2013 after a 33-year marriage.

As the Indianapolis Colts community reflects on Jim Irsay’s contribution to the franchise and the NFL, his legacy will continue to be honored by those who played for and respected him. His dedication to the team and its players, as well as his love for the city of Indianapolis, will not be forgotten.

Remembering a Generous Spirit

In paying tribute to his memory, the sporting world will remember Jim Irsay not just as an owner, but as a beloved figure whose legacy will be etched in the hearts of many. His passion for football and philanthropy enriched both the lives of players and fans alike, ensuring that his impact will resonate long after his passing.
