President Donald Trump addressed an audience in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, extolling the advancements made towards peace in the Middle East. He emphasized the importance of economic development over following Iran’s, as he put it, “self-destructive” path. This speech took place shortly after his meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
During his address, Trump reiterated America’s commitment to a robust partnership with Saudi Arabia. He also voiced strong disapproval of Western interventionist policies, which he claimed have led to turmoil in the region.
Trump’s message highlighted the potential for a transformative future in the Middle East if nations prioritize collaborative economic interests. He stated, “If the responsible nations of this region seize this moment, put aside your differences and focus on the interests that unite you, then all humanity will soon be amazed at what we will see here in the geographic center of the world, and the spiritual heart of its greatest faiths.”
He continued, asserting that a new wave of leadership is rising, one that seeks to move beyond age-old conflicts. “Before our eyes, a new generation of leaders is transcending the ancient conflicts and tired divisions of the past, forging a future where the Middle East is defined by commerce, not chaos,” he added.
The President emphasized that this significant transformation did not stem from Western powers intervening with their own agendas. Instead, he credited local leaders for driving progress. He remarked, “It is crucial for the wider world to note, this great transformation has not come from Western interventionalists flying in with lectures on how to live or how to govern your own affairs.”
Trump juxtaposed the successful developments of cities like Riyadh and Abu Dhabi with the failures seen in places like Kabul and Baghdad. His remarks sought to underline the importance of self-governance over external dictation.
Trump’s speech coincided with the signing of multiple economic agreements with Saudi Arabia, which he stated would total $600 billion in trade deals. These agreements have the potential to generate up to 2 million jobs in the United States.
Among the economic initiatives, several agreements were consistent with long-discussed objectives of both Washington and Riyadh, especially in sectors related to defense.
Some details of the agreements remained largely under wraps until Trump’s visit. Notably, a cooperation agreement was established between Saudi Arabia and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Asian Arts. Additionally, a collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution National Zoo and Conservation Biology was formed, showcasing a commitment to cultural and environmental initiatives.
The White House released a statement following the ceremonial signing, emphasizing Saudi Arabia’s $600 billion pledge to invest in the United States. This investment is expected to forge robust economic ties that will last for generations.
Among the highlighted investments, one stood out: Saudi Arabia’s DataVolt announced a $20 billion commitment towards building AI data centers and energy infrastructure within the U.S. Furthermore, a consortium of companies including Google, Oracle, Salesforce, AMD, and Uber revealed an $80 billion investment targeted at transformative technologies across both nations.
Impressively, the agreements also contained a historic $142 billion defense sales agreement. The deal will provide Saudi Arabia with advanced military equipment and services from a range of U.S. defense contractors. The White House described this as the largest defense sales agreement in history.
This defense sale, set to be finalized in the fall, includes enhancements across various military facets. These include air force advancements, space capabilities, air and missile defenses, as well as maritime security and land forces modernization.
As the Middle East landscape continues to evolve, Trump’s focus on economic collaboration over conflict highlights a shift in diplomatic approach. By promoting joint ventures and partnerships, he aims to foster a stable environment that could benefit not just the nations involved, but the broader global community.
Trump concluded his address with a call for unity and shared purpose among Middle Eastern nations, urging leaders to harness their collective strengths to pave the way for a prosperous future.
