As Shedeur Sanders unexpectedly slipped in the NFL Draft, President Donald Trump urged NFL owners to consider the former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback for their teams.
Initially projected to be selected as high as No. 2, Shedeur’s unexpected draft fall sparked widespread speculation and discussions across the sports world.
During the draft proceedings, Trump publicly critiqued the decisions of team owners as franchises overlooked Sanders.
On April 25, Trump expressed his frustration, stating, “What is wrong with NFL owners? Are they STUPID?” He emphasized that Deion Sanders, Shedeur’s father, had not only been a remarkable college football player but also excelled in the NFL. According to Trump, Deion is a savvy coach with the requisite experience to raise a talented son, asserting, “Therefore, Shedeur, his quarterback son, has PHENOMENAL GENES and is all set for greatness.”
In a recent phone interview with Fox News contributor Hugh Hewitt, Trump elaborated on his motivation to defend Sanders. He attributed his support to a combination of factors, including the legacy of NFL great Deion Sanders and the apparent genetic advantages of the young quarterback.
Trump noted, “His father is a big Trump fan, and I like it when people are Trump fans. His father has said great things about me over the years.” He continued by praising Shedeur’s talents, stating, “No. 2, genetics. He has good genes for a football player. I watched him play for a little bit, and I thought he was a really talented quarterback. I like his gene pool, and I like his talent. I really think he’s going to do well. I just felt they treated him really badly.”
Shilo Sanders, Shedeur’s brother, also shared his thoughts regarding Trump’s involvement, stating, “Man, I’m not even gonna lie. That was the coolest thing I’ve ever seen, bro. Fam, if you got the president tweeting, bro, you know something’s wrong.”
Following the conclusion of last month’s draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Shilo as an undrafted free agent. His father, football legend Deion Sanders, expressed gratitude for the opportunity during a Twitch stream. “I’m very thankful. Tampa’s a wonderful spot. Coach [Todd] Bowles is a defensive-minded guy. He’s brilliant,” Deion stated.
The two-time Super Bowl champion further solidified his appreciation by making a personal call to Tampa Bay’s general manager Jason Licht. Reports suggest that Deion thanked Licht for providing his son with a fair chance at success.
Shedeur Sanders wrapped up the 2024 season boasting impressive statistics with over 4,134 passing yards. He is set to join a competitive quarterback room in Cleveland, which features notable names including Deshaun Watson, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and Dillon Gabriel.
