On Friday, President Donald Trump praised his administration’s efforts to tackle crime in Washington, D.C., while revealing that the draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be held at the Kennedy Center on December 5.
During the announcement in the Oval Office, Trump was joined by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. As chairman of the Kennedy Center, Trump emphasized the significance of hosting the draw at this renowned venue.
“On December 5, the draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place at the Kennedy Center. Some people refer to it as the Trump-Kennedy Center, but we’re not prepared to do that quite yet – maybe in a week or so,” he said, eliciting laughter from those present.
The venue, located in the heart of the nation’s capital, will host a global audience. Trump expressed his excitement at bringing the international event and exceptional athletes to Washington, D.C. He stated, “It’s a tremendous honor to host such a remarkable group of people and the best athletes in the world in our cultural center.”
In a bold move, Trump used the occasion to highlight his administration’s recent federal maneuvers aimed at reducing crime in the nation’s capital. “In Washington, D.C., we have the lowest crime numbers they’ve had in years. That’s a notable achievement and the first time in memory that this has happened,” he stated, showcasing a significant shift in crime statistics.
Reflecting on the previous state of affairs, Trump remarked, “It was unsafe. It was horrible. Mayor Bowser better get her act together or she won’t be mayor very long because we’ll take it over with the federal government, run it properly.”
He playfully assured Infantino that the city would be in good shape by the time of the draw, humorously suggesting that the FIFA President would
